**********
The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) & Jack Perry vs. The Lethal Twist (Jay Lethal, Lee Johnson, & Blake Christian)
Nick Jackson started the match with Blake Christian, and Christian faked a handshake to attack Nick. However, the Bucks did what the Bucks always do and hit a series of fast double team moves to turn it around, ending with Jack Perry joining in to hit a hurricanrana on Lethal as the Bucks hit a high five bulldog on Christian and Johnson. Jack Perry then hit two suicide dives on Christian, but got distracted by Lethal enough to miss a moonsault and Christian superkicked him. Nick Jackson, however hit a dive, taking the advantage back. Before they went to a break, Lethal Twist managed to hit a series of triple team moves.
The tandem offence form all 6 men continued as they came back from the break, ending with Matt Jackson hitting a series of Northern Lights suplexes across the ring before suplexing Lee Johnson into Blake Christian. Matt and Nick hit their double stomp into a powerbomb combo, and hit stereo powerbombs into stereo sharpshooters. Jay Lethal tried to make the save, but he was taken down by Jack Perry into a snare trap, but the moves were broken when the others all made the ropes.
Lethal hit the Lethal Combination on Jack Perry, and the Bucks hit a sunset flip assisted German suplex on Lethal. Lethal hit a Lethal Injection on both Bucks, then Blake Christian hit a flying stomp on Jack Perry, who Lee Johnson had on his shoulders, and used the double stomp to hit a Death Valley Driver, before Lethal flew off the ropes with a flying elbow. A lot of superkicks happened soon thereafter from everyone. The Bucks launched Jack Perry from the ramp into a flying knee on Lethal, and then Perry hit a moonsault to the floor on Christian and Lethal while the Bucks hit the Meltzer Driver on Johnson for the pinfall victory.
Result: The Young Bucks & Jack Perry defeated The Lethal Swirl
–Mina Shirakawa and Kris Statlander were backstage, and Shirakawa said that she told Statlander so about Hikaru Shida. Statladner said that no one liked being told that, and that their match tonight to qualify for the TBS Championship Survival of the Fittest match would end the same way as their last match – with Statlander winning. Harley Cameron interjected and said that she wanted to see a clean fight, and asked that they shake on it. They shook hands. Harley shook something else. Harley said that they could shake with a handshake too rather than her way.
–Hikaru Shida was with Lexy Nair and said that she was going to face whoever made it, and she was the best, so they would find out in the Survival of the Fittest Match that she is is going to be the TBS Champion.
Mina Shirakawa vs. Kris Statlander in a Survival of the Fittest Qualifying Match
Shirakawa and Statlander started the match with some basic grappling. Statlander put Shirakawa on her shoulder on the apron and then dropped down, face planting Shirakawa on the apron as they went to the ad break. When they came back Shirakawa hit a DDT on Statlander and a crossbody from the top rope to the floor. Shirakawa then hit a shotgun dropkick on Statlander for a 2-count. Statlander hit a Michinoku driver for a 2-count. Shirakawa then countered out of Staturday Night Fever and hit La Mistica before starting to exchange pinfall attempts. Statlander countered one into a pinfall and got the win.
Result: Kris Statladner defeated Mina Shirakawa
–A goofy 90s style ad aired for Juice Robinson’s spay and neuter service, and said that they were going to take out the Dogs. It was incredibly wacky.
–Jack Perry was backstage and he challenged Zack Sabre Jr. to a match, noting that the first time he ever had a drink at a bar was with Sabre, but when they go for drinks this time he would be buying, as the winner should always buy.
The Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin) (w/ MVP) vs. Warren Johnson & Zack Mason
Mason and Johnson had a gameplan, beating on Bobby Lashley with quick tags, but Lashley no sold it, and destroyed either Mason or Johnson. Benjamin tagged in and hit his running knee in the corner and a superkick, then Lashley hit a spear, and the match was over.
Result: The Hurt Syndicate defeated Warren Johnson & Zack Mason
–MVP grabbed a mic and said that the match was a commercial for what they could do. MVP said that they didn’t want championships, but money (a bit odd to say in a wrestling promotion). They said that they were not friends with anyone or enemies, but were businessmen, and if someone wanted someone hurt, bring a bag of cash, and they’ll bring the pain.
–SkyFlight were backstage. Christopher Daniels announced that Dante Martin was going to face Mistico, and Daniels also announced that Matt Sydal was back in AEW after injury and SkyFlight had his back. Sydal said that he promised he was going to take it to higher heights than ever seen before.
–Nigel McGuinness welcomed Tommaso Ciampa and Chris Jericho to the ring. Jericho said that he knew who Ciampa was, and he said that he was certain they were going to face off at some point since Ciampa came to AEW. Jericho said that it didn’t matter which version of Chris Jericho he faced, because every one of them would beat Ciampa. Ciampa said that this was the Jericho that he wanted, and he wanted Chris Jericho to invite all his friends to AEW Beach Break in Clearwater, Florida, and he was going to prove he was better than Chris Jericho at that show.
Jericho accepted the match, and said they would wrestle then, but tonight they were going to fight. Jericho punched Ciampa and went for the Liontamer, but Ciampa low blowed him and sent him crashing into the ringside steps. Jericho came up bleeding, and Ciampa screamed “This isn’t a game! You bit off more than you can chew” before hitting a running knee that laid Jericho out in the ring.
–A recap video of Gabe Kidd attacking Shota Umino at NJPW Dominion aired how PAC sent Kidd to attack Umino. Umino accepted the match, and it will be PAC vs. Shota Umino for the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship at AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door.
Dante Martin (w/ Christopher Daniels) vs. Mistico
Mistico was incredibly over with this audience, which always makes for a fun match when he shows up. Mistico and Martin shook hands and then started grappling. Martin leapfrogged Mistico and Mistico went to the floor. Martin hit two tope suicidas and sent Mistico back into the ring. Mistico hit an enziguri and then hit a tope suicida on Martin. Martin hit a DDT to the leg of Mistico as they went to break.
When they came back, Mistico hit an enziguri and a crossbody before hitting a headscissors and a torneo to the floor. Mistico and Martin both went for boots and both men went down. Mistico went for a moonsault on Martin, but Martin got both his feet up. Martin hit a hard chop and dropped Mistico to the mat. Mistico reversed an Irish whip and hit a powerslam. Mistico went for a senton bomb, but Martin moved and hit a package powerbomb for a two count. Martin went to the top rope, but Mistico cut him off and hit a Spanish fly for a three count.
Result: Mistico defeated Dante Martin
–The Demand were backstage and Ricochet claimed that Konosuke Takeshita was afraid of him, and that if they were to wrestle right now, he would take his AEW International Championship. Ricochet then said that Matt Sydal was back, and when he actually remembers how to wrestle Ricochet would be happy to give him some air time.
–The Dogs were backstage and talked about Cope & Cage. Finlay claimed that he has been in the business for 33 years, being born into it, and he learned everything he needed from his bag of bones father. Finlay said that he was going to teach them a lesson, rather than learning from Cope & Cage. Connors said that the Dogs were going to put Cope & Cage down, taking the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
PAC (w/ Marina Shafir, Jon Moxley, & Daniel Garcia) vs. Jay Alexander
Moxley joined the commentary desk, and said that he thought this wouldn’t take long. Alexander was a big guy, but PAC was quicker, hitting the ropes and taking his head off with a lariat. Shafir attacked Alexander on the floor behind the referee’s back. PAC hit a running kick on Alexander and a shotgun dropkick before hitting the ropes hard and nailing another lariat and then the brutalizer to make Alexander tap out. Moxley put over how tough PAC was, and compared Marina Shafir’s smile to a puma barring its fangs.
Result: PAC defated Jay Alexander
–Thunder Rosa was backstage and addressed Divine Dominion, and said that she was going to bring a partner from CMLL to challenge them to a tag match, as she has been working CMLL a lot lately.
Adam Priest vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
Sabre immediately showed his technical skill in this match. Priest was able to get some offence with power moves, but Sabre kept transitioning back to the left arm of Adam Priest. Sabre stomped on the biceps of Priest, but Priest responded with a hard forearm and hard chops that sent Sabre to the apron. Sabre locked on an armbar over the ropes like his mentor Minoru Suzuki as Priest tried to attack him on the apron before going to the ad break.
Priest and Sabre were exchanging strikes in the middle of the ring when they came back, and Sabre ate a DDT from Priest for a 2-count. Priest then went to attack the knee of Sabre, smashing it into the mat. The crowd really got into this as Priest continued to hit Sabre hard, and as Sabre countered things with his own submissions, screaming in pain as Sabre trapped the arm of Priest and twisting it with his feet.
Priest hit a chop block on Sabre as he hit the ropes, but it was a quick transition from that into a submission that Sabre finally got the win.
Result: Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Adam Priest
This was a very fun match. Priest and Sabre had great chemistry, and Sabre showed why he is one of the best wrestlers in the world.
–Divine Dominion was backstage and Megan Bayne said that she dominated Thunder Rosa when she was alone, and what makes her think it will be any different with Lena Kross being there now. They accepted Rosa’s challenge.
–Chris Jericho was backstage covered in blood, and thanked Ciampa for what he did, but said that he wouldn’t be thankful for what happens next.
–Lexy Nair was on the ramp, telling the story of the main event match.
Athena vs. Maya World in a Owen Hart Foundation Semi-Final Match
Maya World was determined to her ability in this match, and Athena did a wonderful job selling for her to make her look dangerous. World and Athena exchanged a lot of holds and counters that were very cool, including a few I have never seen before. World hit a full nelson into the middle turnbuckle on Athena and then followed with a tiger feint kick. World and Athena battled on the apron, with World hitting a forearm that sent Athena to the floor. World went for a dive onto Athena, but Athena rolled with the momentum and hit some sort of flipping flap jack on World on the floor as they went to an ad break.
Maya World hit an uppercut for a two count, and then a hurricanrana and role up before hitting a stomp. World went to the middle rope and hit a moonsault for a 2-count. After a few exchanges of pinfall attempts Athena hit a powerbomb for a 2-count. World slipped out of powerbomb and hit a cutter for a 2-count, but Athena countered a running knee by grabbing the leg and hitting a curb stomp for a 2-count.
Maya World hit a bridging powerslam, floated backwards and hit a second for a 2-count. Athena and World exchanged a series of attacks on the floor that were countered until World sent Athena into the guardrail. Athena and World battled on the guardrail and Athena hit a uranage on World, who crashed from to the floor. Athena pulled World into the ring and said “You think about your brother and hit me!” World fired up with forearms but World ate a suplex and a handspring forearm from Athena. Athena then hit the O Face, but World kicked out at 2! The crowd was going nuts at this point.
Athena hit two superkicks saying that she was sorry and loved her, but went for another forearm, but World countered into a seatbelt pinfall and managed to get the win over Athena!
Result: Maya World defeated Athena
This is a prime example of doing something wonderful for Maya World out of tragedy and the injury of Sareee. Athena and World hugged after the match and there were tears in Athena’s eyes. I think it is time to make World here and have her win this tournament.
–Mercedes Mone came down to the ring and hugged World as well, and then Athena attacked World from behind and her and Mone beat down World, getting huge heat from the crowd.
Final Thoughts
If you watch one match on this show, watch the main event. Maya World and Athena worked very hard and delivered an excellent match. It was a star making appearance for World, and Athena did everything she could to help put her over. Excellent main event.
