**********

Kevin Knight (w/ Mike Bailey) vs. El Clon

Knight went right after Clon, but ended up getting slapped for the effort. Soon they were exchanging attacks, ending in nip ups. Knight went for a pescado to the floor but Clon pulled the apron cover out and Knight landed, crotching himself on it. This led to Clon attacking the legs of Knight in the ring and keeping him grounded. Knight managed to escape a leglock and hit some forearms and a flying clothesline from Knight.

Knight hit a standing UFO Splash, but only got a 2-count. He will need a one from the top rope. Knight was on the apron after this as Clon tried to get away from the attacking Knight. Knight decided to do a pescado from the apron over the corner of the ring onto Clon, avoiding any threat from the apron cover as they went to a TV break.

When they came back from break Clon hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Knight that ended with Clon turning it into a lung blower of sorts, which was cool. Knight went for another flying clothesline, but Clon ducked it Matrix style and hit a PK on the apron and then a moonsault off the apron onto Knight. That was awesome. Clon ran and did a one foot springboard moonsault onto Knight like he was kicking off a wall. That was very impressive.

Clon went to the top rope, but Knight leaped up onto the top rope with an incredible vertical leap and hit a superplex off the top rope on Clon. Both men then started exchanging pinfall attempts, including when Knight went for a leap frog, but Clon slid on the mat underneath Knight, grabbing his leg and pulling him into a cradle. Clon then hit a powerbomb for a two count. Knight went for a Satellite DDT, but Clon blocked it. Knight hit a springboard clothesline followed by a UFO Splash from the top rope for the win.

Result: Kevin Knight defeated El Clon

Good match here, though it did not have a lot of heat. Kevin Knight, however, continues to look great, and El Clon continues to look better than Hologram ever has. I hope once Hologram comes back he and Clon can have a good match.

–A hype video aired for the Don Callis Family vs. Jet Speed & Mistico for the AEW Trios Championship, including highlights of Bailey vs. Fletcher for the TNT Championship, and how the babyfaces want to take the Trios titles back, making the Callis family pay for their cheating.

–The Babes of Wrath cut a promo on Lena Kross and Megan Bayne saying that Willow will defeat Kross to retain her TBS Championship and that Bayne and Kross will ultimately lose in their attempt at the tag titles at well. I do not think this bodes well for our babyfaces on Sunday.

Komander vs. Mark Davis

The story of this match was worked all around the size difference between the two men. The first few minutes was Komander trying to move faster than Davis, dodging all his offence, until Komander got literally squashed on the apron as Davis sat on him. This did not stop Komander for long, who continued to try and use his agility and speed to dodge and stay ahead of the big man.

Komander managed to hit a moonsault to the floor on Davis, which finally dropped the big man. Komander tried to hit a corner charge, but Davis dodged and charged the corner himself. Komander did a backflip off the top rope and a few handsprings before Davis came out of the corner with a flying elbow that dropped Komander.

Davis then taunted Komander into striking and Komander tried to hit a DDT, which brought Davis to the mat, but Davis grabbed him and pulled him back up into a suplex that dropped Komander for a 2-count. Komander hit a hurricanrana on a charging Davis, kicked him in the back, and went to the top rope, but Davis cut him off. Komander responded with a kick and then a springboard sunset flip powerbomb out of the corner for a 2-count.

Komander went for 450 splash, but Davis got the knees up and Davis took his head off with a lariat for a 2-count. I thought that was the ending right there. Davis went for another lariat, but Komander caught him in an Octopus Stretch. Davis powered out, and Komander hit a drop toe hold instead and hit a 619 before going for his rope walk shooting star press, but Davis moved and hit an enziguri and a deadlift piledriver for the pinfall.

Result: Mark Davis defeated Komander

I didn’t believe for a second that Komander was winning, but that wasn’t for lack of trying. David gave a ton to Komander here before finally winning in a good match.

–The Dogs were backstage at Dynamite after Roderick Strong saved Darby Allin and Orange Cassidy. Finlay and Connors did the talking, say that they thought Strong was like them, but that he was going to go down with his friends at AEW Revolution.

–A hype video airs for Mascara Dorada, who announces that he is coming for gold in AEW, not just CMLL.

–A hype video airs for the 21 Blackjack Battle Royale, with several contenders talking about how they want the Ricochet’s title on Zero Hour, including Anthony Bowens saying he was going to win the the title to prove he is the killer that the Opps needs. Tommaso Ciampa indicated that the National title was his next focus, after taking out Mark Briscoe last week on Collision.

The Triangle of Madness (Thekla, Julia Hart, & Skye Blue) vs. Tatevik, Viva Van, & Karisma

Blue superkicked Tatevik to start the match and then Hart and Blue suplexed her, tagged in Thekla, and Thelka speared her for the win.

Result: The Triangle of Madness defeated Tatevik, Viva Van, and Karisma

–Thekla grabbed the mic afterwards and said that she was sick and tired of hearing about Kris Statlander. She said that she was sick that Statlander made the challenge and then ran and hid, and that she was afraid of her. Statlander replied to this by coming out to the ring and walking right down to the ring to fight all three members of the Triangle of Madness. Statlander slammed Blue on the floor, hit a tombstone piledriver on Hart, and then tackled Thekla.

Statlander took off her belt and handed it to Thekla and invited Thekla to hit her with the belt. Statlander ate the first shot and toughed it out before eating a second and third, but she actually sold them, and Thekla continued the assault, so Statlander looked kind of dumb here. I think the idea was to sell Statlander as tough, like when Cody Rhodes was strapped by MJF years ago, and while Statlander kept getting back up, this ended with Thekla attacking her from behind and then beating Statlander down, so I don’t think it achieved what they wanted it to.

Statlander grabbed a mic and said that she didn’t want Thekla to be afraid of her, but that Thekla should be afraid of what she would need to do to keep Statlander down. So, the point was Statlander was tough, but on the other hand, she got beaten down willingly. This would have worked with one belt shot and Statlander no selling it.

–Marina Shafir cut a promo and said that Toni Storm gave her advice years ago, saying that she should be who she is and lean into her strengths. Shafir said that Storm would do well to take her own advice now, because as Storm gets more violent, Shafir’s strengths shine, and that Storm is going to regret stepping into her territory. Good promo here.

The Demand (Ricochet, Toa Liona, & Bishop Kaun) vs. The Bang Bang Gang (Ace Austin, Austin Gunn, & Juice Robinson)

The fans chanted “Bald!” at Ricochet and in his distress, he tagged out to Bishop Kaun to face off with Ace Austin. Kaun tried to chop Austin, who ducked, and hit a kick before tagging out to Gunn. A portion of the fans were chanting loudly for Toa Liona, but Ricochet tagged in, which was a great little heat move before Gunn hit a running flatliner on Ricochet. Liona tagged in, and Gunn quickly fled. Juice Robinson lightly tagged himself in by patting Gunn on the head.

Liona invited Robinson into the ring, who refused to go through the ropes, leaped over instead, and then flipped Liona off in full whacky Juice Robinson way. Robinson taunted Lion and lured him into drop down before hitting a dive onto all three members of the Demand. The Demand caught him, so Ace Austin flew over the ropes and added to the weight, taking all three men to the floor as they went to an ad break.

Liona quickly took the advantage back, taking out all three members of the Bang Bang Gang in the corner. Liona then Irish Whipped Austin into the corner and he crashed hard into the turnbuckle and over onto the floor, and Ricochet flew through the ropes with a suicide dive. Throughout the break The Demand continued to isolate Ace Austin, but eventually Robinson tagged in and cleared the ring, but ate a dropkick from Kaun that sent him to the floor. The Demand then hit a series of attacks on Austin Gunn in the corner, crushing him several times until Liona dead lifted Gunn onto the top turnbuckle and launched him into a cutter from Kaun and then a splash from Ricochet for a 2-count.

Justice Robinson made the save for Gunn and hit the Left Hand of God on Kaun and Austin and Robinson hit a left hand and superkick combo that sent Liona to the floor. Ricochet sent Austin crashing into the turnbuckle before Austin Gunn hit Kaun with a Fameasser, but Ricochet hit a Spirit Gun on Austin Gunn for the pinfall win.

Result: The Demand defeated The Bang Bang Gang

–Ricochet grabbed a mic after the match, whacked Austin Gunn with it, and then posed with his AEW National title. Ricochet said that on Sunday he was going to retain his title in the 21 man Blackjack Battle Royale, noting that it felt like the company itself was trying to sabotage his title reign. Ricochet said that it didn’t matter if it was 21 men, 41, or 101, he was going to walk in and out as champion.

–Jack Perry was backstage and said that it was not just a match for him on Sunday when he entered the Battle Royale. He was entering to fulfill a lifelong dream to compete in the building he used to go to when he was a little kid in the front row, and now he was wrestling in that arena, and he was wrestling for his friends, his family, and the little boy he was when he was a kid, so he had to win the AEW National Championship. This was very good.

I’m glad they finally addressed the fact that Jack Perry was chasing Ricochet and, in fact, had a win over him. The added motivation for Perry wrestling in the building that made him want to be a wrestler when he was a little kid adds some personal stakes to the match that were not there before this episode of Collision. Perry wanting to fulfill that childhood dream for his family and friends is a really good babyface motivation.

–Toni Strom was laying on the floor, saying that the circus looks happy on the outside, but the performers are exhausted and the paint is cracked, and the performers all respond to the whip of the conductor, and that Shafir was walking into a situation where she was just a performer, and Storm was about to crack the whip. This was fantastic.

Lena Kross (w/ Megan Bayne) vs. Mina Shirakawa

Lena Kross was huge compared to Shirakawa, so Shirakawa stomped on her foot to get her into a headlock. Shirakawa refused to be intimidated, ducking under a clothesline and posing, but was dead lifted by Kross. Shirakawa responded by rolling out of it, but still ended up getting hit with a fall awaay slam by Kross for a 2-count. Kross continued to use her size and power to dominate Shirakawa, hitting a release German suplex for a 2-count.

When the came back from the ad break, Shirakawa was flying off the top rope with a crossbody onto Kross on the floor. Shirakawa then went after Kross’s knee, looking for a figure four leglock, but Kross kicked her out and hit Shirakawa with a hook kick. Kross hit a Yakuza Kick and took Shirakawa back to the middle of the ring, but Shirakawa fought out and hit a spinning back fist and a slingblade off the top rope for a 2-count. Shirakawa went for a clothesline, but Kross ducked under and hit a German suplex. Shirakawa ran at Kross who hit a killer Yakuza kick that dropped her. Kross then hit a Jackhammer for the pinfall.

Result: Lena Kross defeated Mina Shirakawa

Mascara Dorada vs. Andrade El Idolo (w/ Don Callis & Lance Archer)

Dorada offered a handshake to his predecessor, La Sombra, but Andrade kicked the hand away and smirked with disgust at the young babyface. Andrade responded to the speed of Dorada by hitting a hard shoulder tackle and chops that drove Dorada to the mat. Dorada was not one to stay down though, and he hit a hurricanrana that sent Andrade to the floor. Andrade then chop blocked Dorada as he came out of the ring and then posed with a woman in the audience for a selfie.

Andrade hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Dorada. Andrade missed a flying knee in the corner and crashed to the floor. Dorada then hit a slingshot hurricanrana to the floor on Andrade, which even popped Don Callis. Andrade rolled to the apron but ate a DDT as Dorada flew off the top rope and drove Andrade headfirst onto the apron. Dorada tried a springboard moonsault to the floor on Andrade, and Andrade got his feet up, which made Dorada crash and burn hard on the floor.

Andrade took an MJF style scarf from the crowd and mimed talking into a mic, indicating that MJF is all talk. Don Callis attacked Mascara Dorada on the floor and punched him, which Callis then sold his hand, with Lance Archer telling him to be careful and Callis responding with “I know! I just got excited!” That was great. Dorada hit a missile dropkick and then did a Tiger Feint to dodge a corner charge, hit a dropkick, and then an incredible headscissors take down on Andrade.

Andrade then hit the Three Amigos for a 2-count. Don Callis accused Aubrey Edwards of being unable to count past 2 after that. Andrade went to the top rope but got cut off from Dorada. Andrade grabbed him, however, in a fireman’s carry, but Dorada turned it around and hit a top rope hurricanrana on Andrade for a 2-count. Dorada then hit an incredible torneo to the floor and then a 450 splash for a 2-count in the ring.

Andrade then begged for Dorada to hit him, so they started exchanging chops and slaps in the middle of the ring. Dorada ran and tried to do a springboard from the middle ropes, but Andrade ran after him and hit a reverse Spanish fly on Dorada for a 2-count. That was incredible. Andrade went for the DM, but Dorada slipped out into a pinfall attempt and when Andrade kicked out, Dorada hit a superkick. Dorada hit another superkick, this time to the back of Andrade. Dorada went for a corner charge, but Andrade caught him, but Dorada countered into a Canadian Destroyer. This was one of the most incredible destroyers I have ever seen. Andrade rolled to the apron to escape. Dorada tried to suplex Andrade, but he fought out and a headbutt and forearms before hitting Hammerlock DDT onto the top rope before hitting the DM for the pinfall.

Result: Andrade El Idolo defeated Mascara Dorada

What a fantastic main event match. Andrade El Idolo returning to AEW is one of the best things that has happened to his career, and he is really just continuing where he left off back with his first run, becoming a reliable main event star that you can always trust to deliver a great match.

–Bandido was going to come down to the ring and he was cut off by RPG Vice. Brody King made the save and as he was beating on Rocky Romero, Swerve Strickland ran down and hit a flying House Call on King before brawling to the back. Bandido recovered and was face to face with Andrade, but RPG Vice cut him off again. Bandido responded by driving them from teh ring and hitting a giant tope con giro on RPG Vice. Andrade feld into the stands with the woman he posed with earlier, smirking and realizing Bandido would not put her at risk, as the show went off the air.

Final Thoughts

A lot of this episode of Collision was not must see, but stories were subtly advanced, with the announcers noting Kevin Knight’s increase in ego lately, hinting at his eventual heel turn, to Bandido and Andrade being in the main event segment to promote their match, which should be incredible and possibly steal the show at AEW Revolution. Overall, the small things that built to the PPV matches here were great, outside of the rather baffling Statlander/Thekla angle. Good episode, if not a little mundane in the matches. Go watch the main event though. What a treat that was.
