AEW Dynamite comes on the air with the Death Riders & Will Ospreay getting hyped backstage with Jon Moxley saying don’t stop moving forward and have your partners back. They welcomed Ospreay into their hype huddle and Ospreay took a bump into a wheelbarrow it looked like. This broke Marina Shafir & Daniel Garcia, as Ospreay had a big smile, as I assume no one was expecting this. Excalibur, Tony Schiavone & Nigel McGuinness on the call, as they put over Moxley vs. Bandido this Sunday for the Continental Title this Sunday, as well as Mistico teaming with Mascara Dorada in a 3-way against The Young Bucks and Shingo Takagi & Titan.
Death Riders (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta w/Marina Shafir) vs. Mistico & Brodido (Bandido & Brody King)
(This was a fun party match, until the finish, which sadly reminded me of the Death Riders World Title run last year, where damn near every match had the interference/belt shot finish. It’s pretty much depending on the week whether the Death Riders are babyfaces or heels and this week, it was the latter.)
Ground work exchanged by Bandido & Yuta, which quickly turned to snap arm drags before Yuta dodged a handspring into a stalemate. Hurricanrana sent Yuta scrambling to his corner, where Moxley tagged in, as we got a brief shoving match before Bandido found himself in the wrong corner and Castagnoli tagged in. Shafir got in a cheap shot, but Bandido still hit a hurricanrana on Castagnoli before tagging Mistico, who ran wild before Castagnoli planted him with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Déjà vu head scissors from Mistico led to King tagging in and it’s time for the slugfest, as these two picked up right where they left off in the first round of the Owen tournament. King lit up all Death Riders in his path before holding Castagnoli & Moxley by the hand and hit a wildly impressive lucha springing arm drag. This led to a triple Tope Suicida, leading to Bandido mocking Shafir in the process. Back inside, Castagnoli was able to respond, sending Bandido to his corner, where he remained isolated throughout commercial with Death Riders making frequent tags.
Locomotion corner offense connects until Yuta hit a suplex leading to a Moxley near fall. Bandido & Moxley slugged it out before a double down led to Mistico & Castagnoli came back in with Mistico hitting a 619 on Yuta, springboard head scissors on Castagnoli and Code Red for a close two. King back in to throw haymakers, as Moxley piggybacked with a sleeper, only for King to clobber him to the corner and hit the cannonball. Gonzo Bomb broke up by Castagnoli, as Bandido in to deadlift suplex Castagnoli for a huge pop. Yuta flew in with a Busiaku Knee, Mistico with a leaping dropkick, King in to steamroll Moxley with a lariat, as Shafir distracted the ref, allowing Castagnoli to clock King with the Continental Title from behind and Moxley stole the pin.
Match Result: Death Riders defeated Mistico & Brodido when Moxley pinned King
-Renee Paquette is backstage with Team Briscoe (without Mark Briscoe initially), as Darby Allin says he doesn’t feel ready, but truth is, this is Mark’s opportunity and he’ll do anything physically possible to make sure he wins and hopes they all do the same. Roderick Strong says he hates Don Callis, but not as much as he hates MJF for doing what he did to his best friend ADAM! Orange Cassidy said he’ll have backpacks for the match and they can put anything they want in it for their match. Kyle O’Reilly questions where Briscoe is, but answers his own question telling the sickos Briscoe will be in the ring later tonight. Team Briscoe left, as Paquette asked if Cassidy was ok and he said he’s fine and they both just kind of oddly left the shot.
Harley Cameron vs. Marina Shafir in a TBS Title Survival of the Fittest Qualifier
Cameron is rocking Supergirl inspired gear and we saw footage of her at the movie premiere this week. Shafir attacked before the bell, but Cameron ducked a high kick, only to be rag dolled with a throw into a full mount. Cameron kicked out and sank in a deep half crab, only Shafir escaped and ate a knee lift on the apron. Cameron hit a baseball slide and stood tall with a cross body off the steps. Back inside, Shafir cut her off in the ropes and hit a fireman’s carry slam to control the action into break, rubbing her bare foot into Cameron’s face in the corner.
Finally mounting a comeback, Cameron hit an overhead throw, high kick and machine gun corner punches. Crowd loudly supporting Cameron, who charged right into a big boot, knee lifts aplenty, until Cameron spun out into another half crab. Shafir escaped out, kicked Cameron into a Rear Naked Choke, but Cameron trapped the leg and rolled back into a flash pin. Post-match, Cameron went out and pointed at the TBS Title, as Shafir stared her down from the ring.
Match Result: Harley Cameron defeated Marina Shafir to advance in the TBS Title Survival of the Fittest
-Video package of Maya World upsetting Athena on Collision last weekend, as World said from her teacher to her idol, she’s been waiting her whole career for this moment. Mone said congratulations for beating her teacher, but she’s not her teacher, she’s her boss, b*tch. After this, there will be no sympathy cards, as dreams don’t win championships, Mone does. This was a simple, yet effective video package and we learn that Mone & Athena will face World & Hyan on Collision.
