AEW Dynamite live results: MJF vs. Mark Briscoe, Survival of the Fittest

AEW Dynamite is live tonight from Viejas Arena in San Diego, California.

The AEW World Championship will be defended on the show as MJF puts the belt on the line against Mark Briscoe. This follows Briscoe’s team defeating MJF and the Don Callis Family in the 12-person Death’s Door steel cage match Sunday at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door in San Jose.

Also tonight, a new TBS Champion will be crowned. A Survival of the Fittest match will feature Harley Cameron vs. Kris Statlander vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Queen Aminata vs. Persephone vs. Maika.

Tonight’s show will be a double taping, with this week’s edition of AEW Collision also taking place.

AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us alongside Nigel McGuinness & Tony Schiavone as they show exclusive footage of what went down after Forbidden Door. Renee Paquette was outside the locker room of Will Ospreay, who walks in with Alex Windsor by his side. Ospreay said words can’t describe what it feels like when Jon Moxley steps in, as the ladies step away with Moxley tossing an ice pack to Ospreay, who thanks Moxley for being out there. Few weeks ago, Moxley said he’s starting to see “it” in Ospreay, who wants to know what Moxley meant. Moxley said if he could explain it in words, he’d do it forever, as he who defines himself can never know who he really is. You want to be the real thing, you have to live it. This place, AEW, can be something great, this is the greatest sport in the world, despite being filled with carnies and backstabbers, as it’s up to them to protect and preserve this craft. Moxley told Ospreay to be of service and they took a vote on it, taking out a Death Riders patch, saying if he takes it, you can ride with Moxley anywhere. Moxley hands the patch to Ospreay and leaves, as Ospreay looks at it longingly before he walks into Kenny Omega.

Omega said Ospreay has no idea how proud he is of him. Ospreay cuts him off saying Omega isn’t his dad in this situation, he can see Omega looking at the patch, saying just because Omega’s given up on himself, doesn’t mean he will. Omega is caught off guard, when MJF walks in, saying don’t mind him, it’s cute. Omega said he’s so funny, when in a couple days, if MJF survives Mark Briscoe, guess who’s coming to knock on his door? MJF looks passed Omega and tells Ospreay he’ll see him at Wembley, bruv. Omega says to Ospreay he’ll always be his friends, take care of yourself, see you Wednesday.

MJF vs. Mark Briscoe for the AEW World Title

(Damn good World Title match, as Briscoe had plenty of chances, but MJF finally can say he kicked out of the Jay Driller when it mattered the most. Not sure where Briscoe goes from here, but he’ll always be one of the top babyfaces in the company. Post-match set the stage for the next month you have to think, as Kenny Omega is set to earn his way into a potential World Title match, but has to put exactly what Hangman Page put on the line in order to possibly get it.)

Big fight introductions from Justin Roberts, who MJF orders to say hails from the best coast, the East coast. Dueling chants from the crowd, as Briscoe wastes no time stomping a hole into MJF in the corner, as MJF fakes a knee injury immediately, suckering Briscoe in with a snap piledriver. Ripping Briscoe’s bandage off his head, MJF gnaws at the forehead and Briscoe is bleeding within the first 90 seconds. Multiple back drops and poses from MJF, who goes to the well one time too many, Briscoe lands on his feet, fired off a series of palm strikes into a Crane Kick and Exploder. Sliding lariat connects, as Briscoe went up top, only to get crotched before lift-off. MJF up with him, as Briscoe returns the favor, biting MJF and hits the Froggy Bow for two. MJF spun out of a Jay Driller, snapping the arm down, but Briscoe sent him outside and connected with a Tope. Setting a chair up back inside, Briscoe launched off it with a somersault dive. Table set up ringside by Briscoe, as MJF is placed on it with Briscoe going up top, but MJF cut him off pulling him by the beard onto the apron. MJF took down the table and threw it back under the ring, posing for the crowd into commercial.

MJF spat in Briscoe’s face and fired him up, as MJF was clotheslined to the floor with Briscoe in hot pursuit, removing the padding ringside. Briscoe wanted a Jay Driller on the concrete, but took a backdrop instead. MJF tried a Tombstone out there, but Briscoe escaped into a bodyslam of his own, followed by a Cactus Elbow off the apron. Back inside, Cutthroat Driver connects for two, as Briscoe wants a Jay Driller on the apron, but MJF held onto the ropes and collapsed outside. Back to the floor we go, as Briscoe brings back out his table, but the delay allowed MJF to hit a drop toe hold into a chair. MJF charged right into some Redneck Kung-Fu, as Briscoe tight-rope walked the LED board into a Blockbuster. MJF was placed back on the table, Briscoe slipped walking up the steps, recovered and hit a Froggy Bow through the table, but MJF got a foot on the ropes back inside for two. MJF slipped out of a Jay Driller, got the eye poke and a combo of strikes, only Briscoe never went down and took MJF’s head off with a lariat. Back up top, Briscoe hit another Froggy Bow, finally following up with a Jay Driller, but MJF kicked out.

Briscoe brings MJF up to the corner, looking for an Avalanche Jay Driller, but MJF gouged the eyes and created distance. Briscoe charged, MJF tried a Heat Seeker, as both trade near falls. Briscoe again went for Jay Driller, this time MJF countering into a Water Wheel Drop and Heat Seeker for the win.

Post-match, MJF put on his Dynamite Diamond Ring and clobbered Briscoe with it for good measure, as medical personnel came to tend to Briscoe. MJF told the camera that white trash hick should’ve never been in the ring with him, as he kicked the doctors aside and out of the ring. MJF wanted another ring shot, as Briscoe flipped off MJF before Kenny Omega sprinted to the ring and MJF hightailed it. Omega said isn’t MJF filled with piss and vinegar, saying he’d be knocking on MJF’s door if he survived Briscoe. All these matches with weapons and cages, maybe MJF has enough energy to have a match with Omega, tonight? MJF said it’s bad enough he had to come to a dumpster fire like California and declined, saying Omega is dumb enough to think he gets another shot at the Triple B is laughable, as he’s already beaten Omega twice, kicking out of the One-Winged Angel like it was nothing. If Omega wants a match, you’re not a God, you’re a fraud, the answer is no, but MJF stopped, saying Big Hebrew has a great idea. MJF will wrestle Omega next week, under one condition, if MJF wins, the same thing happens to Omega that did to Hangman Adam Page, Omega never will be able to become AEW World Champion again. Omega has until the end of the night to answer the stip.

Match Result: MJF defeated Mark Briscoe to retain the AEW World Title

-Renee Paquette is backstage with MJF and recaps what we just heard before break. MJF brings up Andrade and said payback is coming, you won’t know when or where, but it’ll hit like a ton of bricks. MJF runs down the list of guys he’s defeated as World Champion in his three World Title reigns, as MJF said they were all easy dubs. Kenny Omega is 0-2 against Big Hebrew, as the best wrestler in the world isn’t the Best Bout Machine or Aerial Assassin, bruv and calls Omega gutless. Will Ospreay walks in and says MJF is going to break his neck sucking himself off like that and asks why the stipulation? MJF said it’s because he’s the World Champion, he calls the shots and he’ll see Ospreay’s pale ass at Wembley.

Tony Schiavone introduces Andrade El Idolo to the stage and brings up him turning on MJF & the Don Callis Family at Forbidden Door. Andrade said he’s done with the Callis Family and it’s time to become the new AEW World Champion. Andrade has one question, How You Know? Andrade was attacked from behind by Jake Doyle, Lance Archer, Brian Cage & Kevin Knight as Don Callis leads the way. The beating continues in the ring, with Cage the one getting the most damage in, spiking Andrade with a Drill Claw. Callis took the mic and asked Andrade “how you know, cabron?” and demands his Family get this trash out of his sight, as Knight has a match to win. Andrade is chucked out of the ring and we go to commercial before our next title match of the evening.

-Mercedes Mone cuts a promo on a yacht saying no one is on her level, every company she comes to, she’s the standard. Dreams don’t win championships, she does. At All In, the last piece of what’s rightfully hers. The camera kind of stays on her posing a long time, which I found unintentionally hilarious.

Kevin Knight (w/Jake Doyle) vs. Lio Rush for the TNT Title

(The match itself felt pretty quick with the commercial break added in, but for what we got, Rush was super over with the fans and this Blackheart gimmick is something else. He took an awful lot of this match and commentary even made it known that Knight survived this and escaped with his title. Post-match, I like that Darby Allin wants a TNT Title shot with Knight, but we’re doing the heels saying “you will never get a title shot again” way too much.)

Justin Roberts said Rush was “slithering his way to the ring”, as Rush brings a backpack to the ring and McGuinness brings up Knight getting knocked off the top of the cage at Forbidden Door due to a boobytrapped backpack from Darby Allin. Knight shook the backpack and pulled out a black colored ROH TV Title, as the distraction gave Rush a quick roll-up for two. Rush bit at the right leg before lighting up Knight with a combo of strikes. Doyle drags Knight outside to help him regroup with Callis, who whispers advice, but Rush clocks Knight with a handspring kick before galloping around the ring into a low Tope, as the crowd go nuts for Rush, who startles Callis so much he heads for high ground heading to commercial.

Back from break, Knight connected with a spinning backbreaker, but continued to sell his leg from earlier in the match. Crowd loudly behind Rush, as Knight misses a springboard, comes up favoring the knee and gets clobbered by a Rush right hand. Kip up spinning enzugiri turns Knight inside out, as a low bounce back Cutter connects for two. Bridging cravat from Rush, as Knight got a foot on the rope to break it. Doyle caught Rush diving off the top to the outside, but was sent into the guard rail, giving Knight a chance to drive Rush into the steps and connect with a springboard lariat back inside. Rush got a roll-up for two, but walked into a pop-up slam and a huge Rock Bottom to allow Knight to retain.

Post-match, Darby Allin’s music hits and he walks to the stage, mic in hand. Allin thinks he got Knight’s attention, but what is he going to do with it? Allin wants a TNT Title match and if Knight says no, what happened at Forbidden Door will keep happening. Knight started this, how will he finish it? Knight said he’s tired of dealing with Allin’s Jackass stunts and was about to accept when Callis pulled the mic away. Callis said Allin has been a great champion, but the problem is, at the PPV, the stunt he pulled nearly killing Knight, he crossed the line from wrestler to criminal and the Callis Family doesn’t reward criminal behavior, so he’ll never get a title shot as long as Callis has a say. Allin had a big smile on his face, saying Knight dug his grave. Callis screamed that Allin should be in jail, he’s a criminal, as his Family will protect Knight. We briefly see Speedball Mike Bailey looking on from the crowd as all this happened.

Match Result: Kevin Knight defeated Lio Rush to retain the TNT Title

-Footage of Jericho tapping out JD Drake on Collision was shown, as we go to tonight with Tommaso Ciampa about to demand Renee Paquette say he’s better than Chris Jericho, when a trash can is launched into the camera shot and it’s by Jericho. They brawl backstage, taking out security in the process, Ciampa driving a shopping cart into Jericho, trying to use a drill on him, but Jericho fought free. Jericho leaps off the back of a loading truck onto Ciampa and security, as about 8 guards separate the two before their match next week at Beach Break.

-Renee Paquette heads into The Elite locker room to interrupt The Young Bucks & Kenny Omega, asking if he’s made a decision? Matt Jackson said two Elite comrades have fallen to this stipulation, while Nick said Omega has got this, he’s a gambling man. Omega cuts them off, telling Paquette he’s not made a decision, saying if he can’t challenge again, what’s left for him? When Omega looks back on his first reign as champion, he needed help, he went to a dark place to get it done, so if he takes this match, he wants to do this on his own, it’s win or lose, alone. The Bucks support him no matter what he decides.

AEW Continental Champion Jon Moxley & Will Ospreay (w/Marina Shafir) vs. The Swirl (Blake Christian & Lee Johnson w/Jay Lethal)

The Swirl attacked at the bell, chop blocking Moxley and sending Ospreay to the outside, as Rick Knox just lets Johnson & Christian both stay in there an extended period, as Johnson monkey flipped his own partner into a lariat on Moxley. After one boot in the corner, Moxley makes tags Ospreay, who took out Johnson on the apron and sent Christian outside with a snap hurricanrana. Slingshot cross body wipes out both, as Christian is worked over heading into break. The Swirl gained the advantage during break, isolating Moxley and continuously baiting Ospreay. Helluva Kick by Johnson and Spear to Ospreay on the apron from Christian led to a Double Stomp/Death Valley Driver snazzy double team for two.

Moxley fought off corner charges, threw chops at everyone in his way, until Lethal tripped him up, until Black Machismo turned right into Shafir’s clutches and took an Exploder that had the crowd pop big. Huge lariat turned Johnson inside out, as Ospreay made the hot tag with a double handspring Pele kick. Standing Sky Twister Press on Johnson for two, as he ramps up locomotion corner strikes with Moxley. Ospreay shoved Moxley out of the way and took out a springboard Christian with a Cutter in mid-air, as Moxley & Ospreay hit stereo Paradigm Shift & Hidden Blade to get the win. Post-match, we see that Ospreay is wearing the Death Riders patch on his gear that Moxley gave him earlier.

Match Result: Jon Moxley & Will Ospreay defeated The Swirl when Ospreay pinned Johnson

-Post-match comments from Cope & Cage on Sunday at Forbidden Door is shown. Cage said no doubt in his mind were they walking out still Tag Team Champions, but what the hell is the deal with Jay White? Copeland said he owed him a favor and they’re even now. Cage said before White collected a paycheck sitting at home for a year, he had a serious problem with him and still does. Cage walks out and Cope just said…goodbye?

We Hear from the returning Switchblade Jay White

White’s music hits and he’s out with the entire Bang Bang Gang by his side for a collective Guns Up before heading to the ring. White is met with Welcome Back chants, as he says 459 days they’ve waited to do a Guns Up. Lot of things can change in 459 days, when he left, fans wanted struggling to get away from the Death Riders, when now, they don’t really seem to want to anymore. To add to that, they’re kicking it with the biggest fraud in the industry, but White isn’t here to talk about Billy (Will Ospreay), because now, you’re back with top shelf, golden gun slingers, the Bang Bang Gang. White has been dying to ask this question, Who Let The Dogs Out? and said he’s talking about Clark Connors, Gabriel Kidd & David Finlay Jr. White talked about joining the NJPW Dojo with Finlay in 2015, there’s a lot to unpack and he’s never come across such a naturally gifted wrestler, which makes sense, he’s born into this business, 4^th generation and raising a 5^th. Through all that, it doesn’t take away Finlay is still a nepo baby b*tch boy. We get nepo baby chants and The Gunns hilariously high-five each other at that chant.

White said the stench of Finlay’s arrogance has lingered far too long in only 4 months and who can let people breathe easy than yours truly. White is the most Elite, the Switchblade, the catalyst of pro wrestling, no one’s got what he’s got. Sunday was just the beginning, Finlay will learn to breath with him, as this is still the Switchblade Era. If you aren’t down with the the Collision Cowboys, they’ve got two words for ya, Guns Up.

-Shane Taylor Promotions are backstage and said after 15 months, the Bang Bang Gang is at full strength, but a new crew runs Collision. They challenge White and three of his friends for Saturday.

Kris Statlander vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Persephone vs. Maika vs. Harley Cameron vs. Queen Aminata in a Survival of the Fittest Match for the vacant TBS Title

(For the most part, this first time match on AEW TV came off well, maybe there were too many flash pins and roll-ups, but the crowd reacted to every one of them. Most notably they were surprised by the early Cameron elimination, angry that Aminata went and also audibly upset Persephone was eliminated as well. I was surprised they didn’t give this to someone who has never held a title in the company before like Cameron or Aminata, but clearly, they have plans with Shida as champion and also, they’re obviously going with Statlander & Persephone after this as well.)

Bell sounds and everyone hits high impact moves to stand tall momentarily, with Shida faking a dive off the second into an eye poke and roll-up on Persephone for two. Cameron holds Persephone for Shida, let’s go, popped Shida with a knee lift and low-bridges Statlander to the outside. Maika in, but Cameron flies in with a Shining Wizard, leaving Cameron & Persephone to form an alliance, as they take out Shida & Aminata. Stereo corner strikes, as Cameron poses, allowing Persephone to sneak up behind and hit a Razor’s Edge on her to steal the pin.

Persephone begs off on Statlander, who spikes her with an Angle Slam, nearly hit Wednesday Night Fever on Aminata, but Shida cut her off. Assisted Chocolate Kisses on Statlander by Aminata with Shida, as Maika jumps in and suplexes Aminata onto Shida. Statlander signals for both to target Shida, as they hit a double big boot and go after Aminata in the corner with splashes. Persephone was the last to take the double team offense, as she’s lit up with chops. With no one left, Statlander & Maika start slugging it out, until Shida clocks Statlander with her kendo stick. Maika & Shida trade vertical suplexes and clotheslines, until Shida tried using the kendo stick again, Statlander pulled it away, but was violent ripped to the floor face first by Persephone. Back inside, Shida was able to get a rolling high stack on Maika to eliminate her.

Aminata got a rolling fisherman’s suplex on Shida for two and went up top, but was cut off by Persephone. Aminata fought free, rolled through a double stomp attempt on Shida, who hit a pump knee, only Aminata returned the favor with the Queen’s Crown and Off with Her Head. As Aminata tried pulling Shida to a pin, Persephone rolled her up for a pin and Persephone mocked a stunned Aminata with the L on her forehead. This elimination really pissed off the fans.

Queen Aminata has been eliminated

Tilt-a-whirl head scissors by Statlander on Persephone, who rolled through a sunset flip, missed a dropkick, Statlander missed a senton, got a crucifix pin for two, as Persephone popped up into a running low forearm and charging snap dropkick. Statlander battled back with a barrage of forearms, ran into a thrust kick, but Statlander responded with a discus lariat for the reset. Blue Thunder Bomb from Statlander got a two, but Persephone answered with a bridging German for a near fall of her own. Both collide with a double clothesline, as Shida scurries to both and get multiple two counts. Persephone & Shida argue about who will go after Statlander, who fought off both ladies with a double back elbow from the corner. Spinning Falcon Arrow on Persephone for two, as both ladies trade finisher attempts, with Statlander rolling up Persephone for the flash pin and the crowd are pissed yet again.

Persephone has been eliminated

Shida does the deal with a Falcon Arrow for a close two, as Shida grabbed the TBS Title and wanted to use it, but Statlander ducked with a big boot. Looking for Wednesday Night Fever, both ladies trade roll-ups until Shida sinks in an Ankle Lock. Statlander crawled to the apron, where Persephone clobbered her unconscious with the TBS Title, allowing Shida to pull Statlander back to the middle of the ring and the ref called the match.

Match Result: Hikaru Shida last eliminated Kris Statlander to win the TBS Title

Kenny Omega was about to make his entrance when he’s cut-off by Will Ospreay, saying he wants to wrestle Omega at Wembley, questioning if Omega thinks this is a good idea? Omega asks if Ospreay thinks he can’t do it? Ospreay said of course he does, but doesn’t know if Omega believes in himself. Omega said this is his Death Ground and will go out guns a-blazing, hopefully he has Ospreay’s support. Ospreay said he always will and they hugged before Omega went to the ring to give his answer.

Omega said he’s done this over half his life, there’s been no greater pleasure than to give the fans all he has. Whether he was a 14-year-old boy or 42-year-old broken down man, you get the same 100% Kenny Omega every single time. Omega has won titles, broke records, he has a career he could hang his hat on and look back on fondly, but there’s a selfish part of him that know this just isn’t enough, there’s still a little left in the tank. Part of Omega believes, if Ospreay, The Bucks & the people believe just one more time, he knows he can be a champion everyone can be proud of and stand on the greatest stage for AEW at All In, where the best wrestler, to face Will Ospreay. All he has to do is put it on the line against MJF. If he fails, he’ll become just like Cody, just like Hangman, he’ll be just another man who can’t challenge for the World Title again. Is the cost simply too high? The answer is no, you want him to put it all on the line, there’s a possibility MJF hasn’t considered, that Omega is still the Best Bout Machine, The Cleaner, to some, The God of Professional Wrestling. Omega can’t lie, to have one more chance to beat the brakes off MJF, it gets the blood flowing, so the answer to MJF’s challenge is yes. Next week, bring the BBB, bring yourself, get ready to pass over what’s rightfully his and Omega is coming prepared, so until then, I must bid you adieu, goodbye and goodnight, bang.

Right on cue, Omega gets decked by MJF from behind, as MJF puts on his Dynamite Diamond Ring, looks to charge, but Omega shot a double leg and the fight is on briefly until security and officials rush the ring to separate them both. Omega breaks free first, then MJF, who screams he’s the best in the world. We’re told it’s official, MJF vs. Omega next week for the AEW World Title, if Omega loses, he’ll never get a World Title shot again.
