AEW star Buddy Matthews undergoing surgery

Buddy Matthews is undergoing surgery to finally take care of the ankle injury that has sidelined him since February.

Initially, Matthews was hoping that the injury wouldn’t keep him out of action long. He was targeting April for his return, but the ankle did not heal like he thought it would. Mathews said in June that there was no mobility to his ankle and he was not able to move properly.

Mathews announced the surgery in an Instagram stories post today, sharing a photo with his wife Rhea Ripley as he prepared to go under the knife.

“Update: heading into surgery to repair my ankle,” he wrote.

The injury happened at February’s AEW Grand Slam Australia event when Mathews was making his entrance to face Kazuchika Okada. He still continued on with the match despite being hurt.

Matthews did not break his ankle but suffered ligament and cartilage damage. While there is never a good time to be injured, the timing was especially bad here as Matthews, Brody King & Julia Hart were attempting to gain momentum as a trio following Malakai Black’s departure from AEW. The former House of Black were renamed the Hounds of Hell with Black gone from the promotion.
