Hook describes his AEW character: ‘I’m me’
Hook’s AEW persona isn’t much of a departure from who he is in real life.
During a recent appearance on Busted Open Radio, Hook was asked to describe his AEW character to anyone who might be unfamiliar with him. Hook said everything he is in AEW, from his personality to his fashion choices, is who he genuinely is.
“Ah, man — I’m me,” Hook said. “I’m a dude from New York. My father’s one of the greatest ever, and I’m the greatest second-generation wrestler of all time.”
Hook (Tyler Senerchia) noted that, when he was growing up, his father Taz wanted him to be “anything but a pro wrestler.” Hook was a top lacrosse player in college and studied business before dropping out.
“I thought I wanted to go work in business. Once I was taking classes, I was like, ‘I can’t do this with my life.’ So, I opened my mind up to something else I’m passionate about with different creative outlets,” he said. “And then I had my mind and eyes kind of opened up to pro wrestling being the perfect hybrid of two of my biggest passions, between being an athlete and being creative, being an artist. So, it was very organic the way it came about. And it is the purest passion in my life, 100 percent.”
While Taz did not initially want his son to become a wrestler, he ended up encouraging Hook to enter the business. Taz’s perspective was changed by how much the industry has changed since his days in the ring.
“It’s really cool,” Hook said about working with his father in AEW. “I mean, it’s something I try to remind myself to be really grateful for. Because, naturally, me and my father can butt heads — as fathers and sons do. But I value all of his advice so, so deeply. Being able to have someone right there like my father, it’s something I don’t take lightly and I’m very, very grateful for.”
Hook made his AEW debut in 2021 and has now been wrestling for more than four years. He told Busted Open that, along with wrestling, he’s really passionate about acting and wants to pursue both careers simultaneously.
