CM Punk proposes solution for ‘dirty’ ending to WWE SummerSlam title match
CM Punk acknowledged that his WWE SummerSlam victory over Cody Rhodes was under controversial circumstances. To correct the injustice the Undisputed WWE Champion proposed a new solution.
At a recent WWE live event in Fairfax, Virginia, Punk teamed up with Rhodes against Gunther and Ricky Saints. Following his team’s win, Punk addressed his SummerSlam title match against Rhodes citing his controversial win was ‘dirty’ in reference to Randy Orton’s involvement. He added there is no shortage of potential contenders and fan-favorites waiting for a title opportunity despite which Rhodes is entitled to a rematch at any time.
“Now, Cody, over the past couple of weeks, the road to SummerSlam has been a lot of ‘He said, she said’, accidents, on-purposes, a lot of talk about friendship,” said Punk. “To me, you’re not the champ until you beat the champ. You’re somebody who has been the face of this company for over four years. You’ve done everything. You’ve said yes to everything, these people love you, and I love you. The way that SummerSlam went down, the way I won, it’s dirty. I don’t like it.”
“Now, I know that there’s a ton of guys in the back that want a shot at the champion. There are number one contenders, there are superstars who deserve a shot based on the currency they have with the audience, but you my friend, you get a rematch any time you want.”
At SummerSlam Saturday, Randy Orton returned and RKO’d Rhodes during the title match. This interference gave the opening he needed to retain the Undisputed WWE Title.
Orton seems to have thrown his hat in the ring for another shot at the title against Punk. Meanwhile, Kevin Owens’ comeback on Night Two and winning the No. 1 contenders match for the championship puts him in the line for a future title opportunity.
