NJPW confirms next IWGP Junior Heavyweight title challenger

NJPW junior heavyweight number one contender's match

Francesco Akira is first in line for a shot at IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion YOH.

By winning a four-way match on Tuesday, Akira became the number one contender to YOH and secured a title shot that will take place at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on July 6. Master Wato, SHO, and Kosei Fujita were the opponents Akira defeated to get the win.

It was Wato who took the fall in the bout. During the match, there was a moment where YOH got involved to try and fend off interference by SHO’s House of Torture stablemates. YOH was taken out, but Akira had him revived so he could deliver a message to the champion following the match. Akira warned YOH that his time as champion is already over — and Akira will make YOH and all of his fans feel the peak of despair.

Akira also laid out YOH with a belt shot and then posed with the championship.

YOH won the 2026 Best of the Super Juniors tournament and then went on to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship from DOUKI, beginning his first-ever reign with the belt. This will be YOH’s first defense of the title.

A member of United Empire, Akira is a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion but has never held singles gold in NJPW before.

The July 6 NJPW event is a Road to G1 show. It will be broadcast live on NJPW world.
