Kushida to issue Cruiserweight title open challenge on WWE NXT

After winning the NXT Cruiserweight Championship in an open challenge, Kushida is set to issue one of his own.

Kushida posted a tweet today announcing that he'll be issuing an open challenge on tonight's episode of NXT: "Tonight, I’m repaying the favor. I’m issuing an open challenge for MY Cruiserweight Title @WWENXT." It had already been announced that a championship celebration with Kushida would be taking place on tonight's episode.

Last week, Kushida answered Santos Escobar's open challenge and defeated him to win the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. This is the first title Kushida has held since signing with WWE in 2019.

Escobar had become the undisputed NXT Cruiserweight Champion by defeating Jordan Devlin in a ladder match at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver earlier this month. After Kushida's title win, Devlin confronted him backstage. Devlin told Kushida that he has to go home for a little while but will be coming for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship when he returns.

Here's the updated lineup for tonight's NXT:

  • Kyle O'Reilly makes his first appearance since defeating Adam Cole in their unsanctioned match at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver
  • Sarray debuts
  • Dexter Lumis vs. LA Knight
  • New NXT Cruiserweight Champion Kushida will issue an open challenge
