September 25, 2006 Observer Newsletter: WWE Unforgiven, Observer MMA Hall of Fame

WWE Unforgiven was overall one of the best PPV shows of the year due to the main event.

Much of the show was easily predictable. Trish Stratus got to retire as women’s champion. John Cena regained the WWE championship after he and Edge tore down the house. And probably the biggest surprise of the night was that in a nearly three-hour show, at no point were the Toronto fans insulted.

A sellout crowd of 16,105 fans (15,000 paid) came to the Air Canada Centre on 9/17 and saw what may have been the company’s best match so far this year, with Edge, in the dual role of home-town favorite and top heel, dropping the title. The WWE and Toronto have had a unique love/hate relationship over the past decade. On one hand, the crowds are usually as lively as any in North America. But they are also the least predictable. Who would have ever thought, for instance, at SummerSlam in 2004, that Randy Orton would have been cheered against Canadian champion Chris Benoit?
