Penta explains why he won’t revive Lucha Underground moniker in WWE
Before arriving in WWE, Penta had an extensive career on Lucha Underground which paved the way for his current in-ring style. However, his persona at the time was a ruthless heel which marked his unique cinematic presentation.
Penta revealed on the Battleground Podcast that while he appreciates his tenure on Lucha Underground, he has no desire to bring that version of his persona to WWE.
“I feel like with my experience I feel different because, happen things in my life difference that I come to WWE but at the same time I still focus, I still work hard every day training every day I push to the limit my mind and my body because I know my responsibility now I’m Penta, not the same Penta that’s (from) two years ago. This Penta is very different. And this Penta I needs different kind of stuff because I know my responsibility with the fans, with the children everywhere and everyone. So that’s why I prefer now (to) stay focused in my career and my character.”
“I know I represent my culture, I represent my country but at the same time the most important thing is I represent the Lucha Libre around the world.”
“Every step in my career was important. So, Lucha Underground was a breaking point in my career….I love everything (that) happened there because I think in my mind or in my opinion, Lucha Underground was my high school in this sport. So now I want to show the world who is the real Penta, who is the Penta now. And the Lucha Underground was amazing. A lot of big matches, crazy matches. I love Lucha Underground. That’s why now I put in my work every single thing I learn from Lucha Underground.”
Penta was associated with Lucha Underground for 4 years until 2018. He made his WWE debut in January 2025 and soon established himself as a standout signee. While he continues to incorporate the experience and lessons he gained during his Lucha Underground run, the former champion made it clear that his focus is on evolving his character rather than revisiting the darker persona that helped launch his international career.
