Rey Mysterio on WWE Hall of Fame induction news: ‘Hunter bro, I’m not ready to retire’
Rey Mysterio feared he was being told to retire when notified about his WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2023.
Mysterio told The Undertaker and Michelle McCool on the latest Six Feet Under Podcast that he was under the impression of being told to retire with his WWE Hall of Fame induction. He recalled the conversation with Triple H who informed him of the accolade prompting concern that was not ready to end his in-ring career. Hunter reassured him the induction was not to retire him, but rather was a fitting recognition given his ongoing feud with Dominik Mysterio.
“I would love to ask that person the same question because when it was brought up, the opportunity to enter the Hall of Fame, I was like ‘Wait a minute.’ It was Hunter I believe told me, I said, ‘Hunter bro, I’m not ready to retire, I wanna keep going.’ He went, ‘No no no, we’re not asking you to retire we just think it’s probably the best time to put you in the Hall of Fame.’”
“This was right when I faced Dom in LA at WrestleMania, so for them it felt like the perfect timing. So I said ‘Yeah, lets do it, if you feel it’s the right timing lets go.’ And little did I know I would be the only active Hall of Famer on the roster that’s still going.”
Mysterio talked about his wrestling beginnings during the interaction. He described how becoming General Manager for AAA is a full circle moment, having launched his career on the promotion decades ago on its inception.
“ I wrestled from 14 until about 17, and aged 17 AAA was gonna start, and I remember Konnan giving me a call and he goes ‘Bro, here’s your opportunity. You wanna come wrestle in Mexico? Now’s your chance.’ I was like ‘What’s going on?’ He goes ‘We’re getting ready to start this promotion, AAA and this is where you wanna be.’”
“Crazy enough to be able to say that I was at the first ever AAA show on live television, and to see the full-circle now. It’s insane.”
Last month, Mysterio was officially announced as the General Manager for AAA, despite which he is an active WWE competitor.
