UFC White House Topuria vs Gaethje Fight Breakdown
Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje will be the main event this weekend at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House. On paper, this fight looks like it will be a typical precision vs pressure encounter, with Topuria’s unbeaten run and strong striking game going up against the chaos and knockout power of Gaethje.
Topuria enters the octagon this weekend as the favorite, but as we’ve seen in recent times, underdogs can get the job done, and Gaethje is absolutely someone who can seize on a moment and secure the W.
Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje – The tale of the tape
| Ilia Topuria | Justin Gaethje | |
|---|---|---|
| MMA record | 17-0-0 | 27-5-0 |
| UFC record | 9-0-0 | 10-5-0 |
| Age | 29 | 37 |
| Height | 5’7″ | 5’11” |
| Reach | 69″ | 70″ |
| Stance | Orthodox | Orthodox |
The two biggest points to note on the tale of the tape is the eight year age gap and the win-loss records. Topuria has not been beaten in pro MMA to this point, whereas Gaethje has 5 losses so far in the UFC octagon.
Striking: volume vs accuracy
| Metric (ufcstats.com) | Topuria | Gaethje |
|---|---|---|
| Sig. strikes landed/min (SLpM) | 4.81 | 6.48 |
| Striking accuracy | 48% | 58% |
| Sig. strikes absorbed/min (SApM) | 3.83 | 7.05 |
| Strike defense | 64% | 51% |
Gaethje eats 7.05 significant strikes per minute, which is the cost of being a pressure fighter built on calf kicks and pocket exchanges. Against a counter-puncher with 48% accuracy, especially with Topuria’s power, that one stat could be the determining factor of the whole fight.
El Matador has knocked out Volkanovski, Holloway, and Oliveira in succession, all clean, all to the head. Gaethje throws more and lands sharper, but he’s been finished before, Max Holloway knocked him out at 4:59 of round five at UFC 300.
Grappling
| Metric (ufcstats.com) | Topuria | Gaethje |
|---|---|---|
| Takedowns/15 min | 1.96 | 0.33 |
| Takedown accuracy | 61% | 40% |
| Submission avg./15 min | 1.1 | 0.0 |
Topuria lands nearly two takedowns per 15 minutes at 61%, plus over one submission attempt per 15. Gaethje is a striker, he does not need to go to ground unless he absolutely needs to. Gaethje’s takedown defense has held up for years, but he’s never met a lightweight with this blend of boxing and a BJJ black belt. If Topuria isn’t able to beat Gaethje on the feet, then he has the ability to go to ground. Gaethje doesn’t really have that option.
What could go wrong for Topuria
Topuria is defending at 155 for the first time, and Gaethje carries one-shot power in both hands. Topuria fights from a heavy, leg-kick-friendly stance, exactly what Gaethje likes to exploit. Topuria’s rarely seen deep water as well, with only two of his nine UFC wins having reached a decision. Gaethje has gone five rounds with Khabib, Poirier, and Pimblett. Past round three, experience swings toward the older, more life-experienced fighter.
The Prediction
I’m picking Topuria to win this by knockout, in either round two or three. His striking accuracy, his defence, and his grappling safety net stack way too high for me to back Gaethje (despite thoroughly enjoying watching him every time he fights!). Justin’s path is narrow, but it is there. If he can land the calf kicks early, drag this into a brawl, and trust that he can use his usual chaos to his advantage, then he has more than a chance.
