Becky Lynch: Great promos are what makes a great wrestler
Becky Lynch believes promos are the key element in making a great professional wrestler.
A new episode of Something’s Burning debuted this week with comedian Bert Kreischer speaking with Lynch and her husband Seth Rollins. On the show, Lynch explained that the hardest part about being a wrestler is getting the fans to care about the work you’re doing in the ring. She thinks promos are the easiest way to get the audience to invest in what you’re doing.
“I would say a great promo,” Lynch responded when asked what makes a great wrestler. “Because if you haven’t told the story, then nobody is going to care about what you do in the — the hardest part is getting them to care about what you’re doing in the ring. And if they have no reason to care, then your work is just so much harder as a wrestler. So if you can get that by the promo, then you’re already in.”
Lynch said promos are what she’s always loved about wrestling. However, Rollins is the total opposite. He didn’t care about promos growing up as a fan and has had to develop that ability over time.
“Promos for me, that was what I always loved, right? So that’s what I was always thinking about, always writing down,” Lynch said. “I was just promos.”
“I was the opposite. I didn’t give two sh*ts about promos,” Rollins added. “I didn’t care about them at all, I just cared about the wrestling. I was the guy in, like, my teens that just wanted to watch the cruiserweights. I was like, ‘I don’t care about these big idiots talking. Like, get [this] Kevin Nash out of here. I want to watch Rey Mysterio and Juventud Guerrera.’ And I kind of carried that over. I was like, ‘Wrestling, wrestling, wrestling, wrestling. They need to be able to work, you know? Screw John Cena, I like Rob Van Dam.’ That was my mindset as I was growing up. And then, consequently, I was awful at promos. I was a really bad promo early in my career.”
Lynch is set to compete in WarGames this Saturday at WWE Survivor Series, where she will team up with Asuka, Kairi Sane, Nia Jax & Lash Legend to take on the babyface group of AJ Lee, Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss.
Rollins is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury and is targeting WrestleMania season for his return.
