Cam Skattebo WWE controversy featured on New York newspaper cover

A WWE Raw angle from Monday night continues to draw significant attention in the New York media.

The back cover of the Wednesday, November 19 edition of the New York Daily News features a photo of NFL player Cam Skattebo and The Judgment Day from their confrontation on Raw. Accompanying the back page is a story about Skattebo — who is injured and will miss the rest of the football season — defending his decision to appear on Raw and get physically involved.

In his rookie season, Skattebo became a star and fan favorite for the New York Giants with his aggressive running style. But the running back had his season cut short on October 26 when he suffered a dislocated ankle, fractured fibula, and deltoid ligament rupture against the Philadelphia Eagles. He is recovering from surgery but played a somewhat physical role on Monday’s Raw at Madison Square Garden, appearing with some of his teammates from the New York Giants and defending comedian Andrew Schulz from The Judgment Day. Skattebo was shoved multiple times during the segment.

After the segment became a talking point in sports media, Skattebo posted a tweet yesterday responding to those who have criticized how he’s spending his time. He was also in the crowd at UFC 322 last weekend before attending the Giants game on Sunday.

“Aye, honestly if you don’t like that I’m having a good time while dealing with a tough time, then just go ahead and unfollow and casually move on,” he wrote. “I’m not able to play football and have the fun I’ve been having my whole life so I am doing things outside the box trying to find stuff to keep me happy. Enjoy the rest of y’all’s week and just don’t talk about me if you ain’t got nothing nice to say.”

Spotlighting athletes and other celebrities in the crowd is something that WWE has done more often in the TKO and Netflix eras. Along with Skattebo being at Raw, WWE released a few official T-shirts featuring him.

The Daily News story featured some quotes from Skattebo’s teammates regarding the appearance.

“I wasn’t there last night,” running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. said. “Best believe I was fighting at home, though, telling him to duck and sit down. But Cam’s a wild man, and everybody knows that, so he’s gonna go out there and do what he do.”
