CM Punk reveals what led to AJ Lee’s WWE return

CM Punk has revealed more details on what led to AJ Lee’s return.

Talking to Pete Rosenberg and Big E on ESPN, CM Punk brought up that at one time, he considered Lee’s return to WWE a “hard no,” but also noted that timing was important in her decision to return as well.

“The ball was always going to be in her court, it just needed to be a conversation,” he said. “Timing was super important. Timing, in this business, is everything. And she’s so busy with everything else, that’s one of the bigger reasons why I just assumed, okay, ten years, it’s long gone. She has so many irons in so many different fires with production companies, so many different scripts, re-writes, and doing her own acting when it comes down the pipe. I just figured she’s too busy and it would never happen. I guess timing was everything in this instance.”

“One day she asked me, ‘I’m so busy doing stuff, but I have this time coming up. If I were to come back, what would you do? Talk to me, essentially, go ahead, book it,” Punk added. “To me, that’s what I do. My brain never shuts off and I said, ‘Well, I would do this, this, and this…” the fact that she didn’t say no right away and she wasn’t turned off by it, there was a hint of a spark.”

Lee made her return to WWE earlier this month, confronting Becky Lynch after she repeatedly slapped Punk and cost him the World Heavyweight title at Clash in Paris. She and Punk will now meet Lynch and Seth Rollins in a mixed tag match at Wrestlepalooza on Saturday.
