CM Punk WWE title win reports indicate how long the plan has apparently been in place

CM Punk WWE RAW Title Win July 2026

CM Punk defeated Sami Zayn on this week’s episode of WWE RAW on Netflix, and two reports online have claimed that this was apparently the plan for quite some time.

A report on Fightful’s Post-RAW show (via Cultaholic) claimed the following: “This was the plan all throughout that. They knew that they were leading to this. They always knew that Sami Zayn was going to drop this title to CM Punk because they have known when CM Punk was going to come back for a while, I believe.”

False Finish has also reported that CM Punk beating Zayn has been the plan for at least a month, posting the following: “False Finish has learned that CM Punk winning the Undisputed WWE Championship and heading into #SummerSlam to defend it has been planned for well over a month. Punk was initially set to challenge Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 43 in Riyadh but WWE is preparing for SummerSlam in Minneapolis to be better than WrestleMania 42 was.”

We’ll be trying to establish more on this ourselves in the next few days, but it does appear as though this plan for the WWE Championship has been in place for some time ahead of Sami Zayn winning the title at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.

It is now expected that Punk vs Cody Rhodes will be one of the headlining matches of SummerSlam in Minnesota, with the company running the show on two nights for the first time ever.
