Drew McIntyre describes fan ‘lunging’ at him during backstage meeting

For Drew McIntyre, being WWE Champion isn’t always fun and games. Sometimes you have to defend yourself from overzealous fans.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, McIntyre told hosts Branson Quirke and CJ Perry (yes, the former Lana in WWE) that he was asked to meet a raffle-winning fan backstage at a recent show.

McIntyre suggested they get Cody Rhodes instead. “He’s a big good guy,” he said. “I’m kind of controversial in-the-middle guy.” But officials insisted and McIntyre told them “Okie-dokie.”

“And the guy came back and lunged at me and did say ‘That’s Cody’s title!’” McIntyre said. “Swung at me and security had to get between us. And I calmed him down, we got a picture together, so he’ll get a picture with the title.”

McIntyre then began to agitate the fans. “He was really, genuinely upset. It was great,” he said. “But because I knew he was so legitimately upset, as soon as we took the picture, he started mouthing off again.

“So I stepped back, moved the security guard between us, raised the title, and just went ‘Ah ha ha ha ha ha!’ and ran off.”

When the hosts suggested the fan be banned from future events, McIntyre disagreed, saying passionate fans were better than disinterested onlookers. He did say that most fans would find themselves getting lost in the show.

“And if they’re not, eventually Drew McIntyre takes off his kilt and they get very excited.”
