Exclusive note on Nick Aldis’ WWE in-ring future
After his in-ring debut for the company at SummerSlam, WWE doesn’t currently have any plans for a second Nick Aldis match.
Aldis lost to Gunther at last weekend’s PLE but put in a well-received performance. Only 39 years old, the former NWA and TNA World Champion has been the on-screen general manager of SmackDown since arriving on WWE television. Our Dave Meltzer writes in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that, while things could obviously change, there are no serious in-ring plans for Aldis right now:
- Regarding reports of Aldis wrestling again, and of course this is possible, we were told that the creative plan was for one match at SummerSlam and at this point there are no plans for it going forward. Could it happen in 2027? Of course it could, but it is nothing in serious plans.
Having at least one WWE match was a dream for Aldis and something he believes he earned through the caliber of work he’s done throughout his career. WWE secured “Morning Glory” by Oasis for his SummerSlam entrance, and a special moment took place with Aldis getting to embrace his wife Mickie James and their son Donovan after the match as Aldis received “You still got it” chants from the crowd.

While appearing on Insight with Chris Van Vliet ahead of SummerSlam, Aldis said he was solely focused on facing Gunther and not thinking about what could come next. He considered it a one-and-done for now and was trusting WWE to make the right decision about his future.
“I have to just concentrate on what’s in front of me. I have to deliver at SummerSlam,” Aldis said. “As far as I’m concerned, I am treating this as one match. I have no expectations. I had none coming in. I have none coming out. I just have to deliver, and trust my boss that whatever comes next is the right thing to do.”
