Former John Cena rival critiques WWE retirement run: Should have been ‘more exciting’

John Cena’s former rival David Otunga is not a big fan of his ongoing retirement run.

Recently speaking to Ariel Helwani on The Ariel Helwani Show, David Otunga opened up in detail about Cena’s current retirement tour. Expressing his displeasure over the creative direction, Otunga said he felt it should have been “more exciting.”

“Honestly I wish it would have been a little bit more exciting. I don’t think it was what people expected.” He added, “I wanted him to have a farewell tour like Kobe (Bryant) did. Kobe’s farewell tour was awesome, I feel like Cena deserves that because, let’s be honest he comes out and says he’s the greatest of all time, he’s not necessarily wrong. The guy does deserve it.”

The former Nexus member also shared his thoughts on Cena’s last RAW match and how things could have been booked differently. “I just would like to see more, I don’t even necessarily know what it would be. I just want them to put more into it”, Otunga noted. “His last Raw at MSG, the six-man tag, it was cool but I would have preferred to see him have a one-on-one match that was great. Show us what John Cena did, leave us with what we know him for on Raw.”

Cena and Otunga share a brief history. While the two have been rivals for the majority of their career, they also shared an extremely small tag-team championship run together back in 2010.

David Otunga recalls his relationship with John Cena

In the same interview with Ariel Helwani, David Otunga also opened up in detail about his relationship with The Leader of Cenation. Describing their dynamic as similar to that of siblings, Otunga said, “Teaming with him was cool, it was brief, it was 24 hours. John and I always had a good relationship, he treated me kind of like a little brother and he would show me tough love a lot. I see that in hindsight because he wanted me to do well. He would always try to rib me, or break my b**ls, just tease me, haze me a little bit, but he always wanted the best from me so I understand that.”

The 17-time World Champion is now set to have his final match on the December 13th edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event.
