Giants coach reacts to Cam Skattebo WWE angle: ‘I thought it was a cool thing’

While Cam Skattebo’s WWE Raw appearance has become a big sports media topic, it doesn’t sound like the New York Giants organization itself had much of an issue with it.

Mike Kafka — the interim head coach of the Giants — was asked about the WWE angle during a press conference on Wednesday. The Raw appearance saw Skattebo and a few other Giants players appear in the front row for a confrontation with The Judgment Day. Skattebo’s involvement — which included him being shoved a couple of times — has drawn some criticism from media and fans given that the rookie running back is recovering from a season-ending injury.

“I knew they were going to the event,” Kafka said. “You know, it’s a rookie event. We have some team events that our support staff puts together for the rookies to kind of get out. So I thought it was a cool thing. I know it was like a staged little brawl there. It was great to see Skatt on the pre-game on the sideline [at Sunday’s Giants game]. His juice, his energy, you can feel it. I can feel it through the TV and through my phone, I was watching the clips [of Raw]. So it’s a cool event for those guys to kind of get out and be out in the community.”

When asked specifically about the physicality of the angle, Kafka said he trusts Skattebo.

“Yeah, I trust Skatt and I trust our medical department, our medical staff to take great care [of our players],” Kafka said.

Skattebo emerged as one of the most popular new players in the NFL this season, gaining fans with his physical running style. But he suffered a dislocated ankle, fractured fibula, and deltoid ligament rupture during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles in late October. He is currently recovering from surgery.

In the Raw angle at Madison Square Garden, Skattebo and his teammates defended comedian Andrew Schulz during an altercation with Judgment Day.

Skattebo responded to the controversy surrounding the appearance by tweeting that he’s just trying to have fun during what’s been a tough time for him.

“Aye, honestly if you don’t like that I’m having a good time while dealing with a tough time, then just go ahead and unfollow and casually move on,” Skattebo wrote. “I’m not able to play football and have the fun I’ve been having my whole life so I am doing things outside the box trying to find stuff to keep me happy. Enjoy the rest of y’all’s week and just don’t talk about me if you ain’t got nothing nice to say.”
