Gunther added to WWE house show in Austria

Intercontinental Champion Gunther is returning home for a WWE event this May.

It was announced today that Gunther will appear at WWE’s house show in his hometown of Vienna, Austria on Thursday, May 2. The event is being held at Wiener Stadthalle Halle D.

When the Vienna live event was announced earlier this month, Gunther wasn’t among the talent advertised.

Gunther had revealed last November that he wasn’t allowed to leave the United States for the next six months due to strict residency regulations. Gunther was born in Vienna but now lives in Orlando, Florida.

This is WWE’s first time visiting Austria since 2019. Cody Rhodes, Bianca Belair, Randy Orton, IYO SKY, Drew McIntyre, LA Knight, Bobby Lashley, Kevin Owens, and Jey Uso are among the other wrestlers advertised.

The Vienna show is taking place in advance of Lyon, France hosting WWE’s Backlash premium live event. WWE has announced the following European events for Backlash week:

  • Wednesday, May 1: House show at Unipol Arena in Bologna, Italy
  • Thursday, May 2: House show at Wiener Stadthalle Halle D in Vienna, Austria
  • Friday, May 3: SmackDown at LDLC Arena in Lyon, France
  • Saturday, May 4: Backlash at LDLC Arena in Lyon, France
  • Sunday, May 5: House show at Arena du Pays d’Aix in Aix-en-Provence, France

Having held the title for more than 600 days, Gunther is the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history. His challenger for WrestleMania 40 has not been announced yet. Sami Zayn, Chad Gable, Dominik Mysterio, The Miz, and R-Truth have all been positioned as possible opponents for Gunther.
