Former WWE champion expected back ‘very soon’ following nose surgery

Gunther has been away from WWE storylines since dropping the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam, but it looks like he’ll be back soon.

In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reports that Gunther is “expected back very soon.” The Ring General has been off WWE programming for nearly two months after an injury angle was done at SummerSlam to explain an impending surgery for a nose issue he was dealing with.

Gunther faced off against CM Punk in the main event of SummerSlam night one on August 2. There was an angle late in the match where Gunther’s face was busted open after being smashed into the announce table. WWE claimed that Gunther suffered a septal hematoma and an orbital blowout fracture.

The SummerSlam match ended with Punk winning the World Heavyweight title from Gunther, but his reign as champion did not last long. Seth Rollins immediately cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on Punk to become the new champ.

A mixed tag bout will take place at WWE Wrestlepalooza this Saturday with Punk & AJ Lee taking on Rollins & Becky Lynch.
