Gunther vs. Sheamus rematch set for WWE SmackDown season premiere

Gunther and Sheamus are set to run back their classic from Clash at the Castle.

WWE announced today that Gunther will defend his Intercontinental title against Sheamus on the Friday, October 7 episode of SmackDown. The episode is SmackDown’s season premiere.

When they faced off at Clash at the Castle earlier this month, Gunther retained the Intercontinental title against Sheamus. The match was rated five stars by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Gunther pinned Sheamus in their first match after hitting a powerbomb and a lariat. Sheamus went for a Brogue Kick near the finish, but his back gave out after all of the punishment he had taken in the hard-hitting match.

It was revealed at Clash at the Castle that Giovanni Vinci had been called up to the WWE main roster. Vinci reunited with his Imperium stablemates Gunther and Ludwig Kaiser.

Gunther has been Intercontinental Champion since defeating Shinsuke Nakamura for the title on SmackDown this June.

Sheamus’ Brawling Brutes stablemates Ridge Holland & Butch will challenge The Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles on the SmackDown episode that’s taking place tonight.
