Major storyline development planned for WWE SummerSlam match | Exclusive

Sami Zayn

Plans will change in Minneapolis.

Dave Meltzer is reporting that a ‘major storyline development’ is set to take place during the Finn Balor vs. Sami Zayn match set for Sunday’s SummerSlam event. That match in particular will reportedly open the broadcast.

“There is a major storyline development planned in the Finn Balor vs. Sami Zayn match tonight,” he writes. “The current plan is that the match will be changed and there will be several twists in that match. Last night’s hype for Punk vs. Gunther was meant as a swerve and likely for the future but not right away but it was done last night for a reason that will become clear very soon.”

The shifting WWE title scene

Punk successfully defended the WWE Championship during Saturday’s SummerSlam event, defeating Cody Rhodes after Randy Orton made his return and laid out Rhodes with an RKO, continuing their feud from the WrestleMania season. During the post-show, he called out several people, including Gunther. The Ring General was also successful at SummerSlam, defeating Nick Aldis in what was Aldis’ first-ever match in WWE.

On last week’s SmackDown, Finn Balor won a qualifying match to face Sami Zayn at SummerSlam, where the winner will become the new number one contender for the WWE title.
