New US Champion to appear on WWE SmackDown

One week after his United States title win, Sami Zayn is set to appear on WWE SmackDown in Chicago.

WWE has announced that Zayn will be appearing on tonight’s SmackDown episode at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. He defeated Solo Sikoa in France last Friday to become the new United States Champion — and Zayn says he wants to kick off his title reign with a bang.

“What a special night and what a special celebration it was last week!,” Zayn tweeted today. “Let’s start this US Championship run with a bang.”

This is Zayn’s first time holding the U.S. title, though he’s had four Intercontinental title reigns before and been been a Tag Team Champion during his time on the WWE main roster.

WWE has also officially confirmed that CM Punk will be appearing in his hometown tonight, with the impending return of his wife AJ Lee heavily rumored. A mixed tag team match with Punk & Lee vs. Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch is being planned for WWE Wrestlepalooza on September 20.

Here is the updated lineup for tonight:

WWE SmackDown (Friday, September 5) —

  • John Cena makes his final appearance in Chicago
  • CM Punk appears
  • New United States Champion Sami Zayn appears
