Result of Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther on WWE SmackDown
The World title match on this week’s SmackDown was nothing but chaos.
Cody Rhodes emerged with the WWE Championship on Friday in Kansas City, but only after excessive shenanigans ensued, all involving Sami Zayn as the special guest referee.
The match first ended with Rhodes retaining after Zayn, upset that Gunther had powerbombed him earlier in the match, kicked Gunther’s hands off the ropes and fast counted him. After the commercial break, all three were seen arguing backstage. Rhodes stormed back to the ring and demanded the match be restarted. Gunther attacked Zayn at gorilla position then returned to the ring so the match could continue.
But the match only lasted another few minutes until Zayn returned to the ring and gave Gunther a helluva kick, causing the new referee to throw the match out on a disqualification. Zayn grabbed the title and yelled at Gunther as Cody recovered. When Cody placed his hand on Zayn’s shoulder, the former referee responded by striking Cody with the championship. Zayn then left the ring with both competitors laid out by his hand.
Backstage, an angry Gunther blamed Nick Aldis for the situation and told him to put him in another championship match, this time at Night of Champions.
