Live Lucha Libre Living Lovely In your Living Room!
Sorry, that was all the “L’s” I had.
Fortunately, El Hijo De Vikingo is bringing his own with him for a match that could have Wrestlemania implications should he be successful in defeating current Intercontinental Champion, Penta.
But first:
The Celebration to honor Reina De Reinas Champion, Flammer
The show started with pictures of Flammer and balloons in the ring. The other two members of Las Toxicas, Lady Maravilla, and La Hiedra, introduced Flammer who came down to the ring without her belt, which was sitting a table in the ring. Flammer has held the title for 974 days (as of this writing).
A video package played, highlighting some of Flammer’s matches and accomplishments during her run. She was congratulated by Mexican entertainment and TV personalities, as well as several luchadores.
Flammer then got on the mic and assured us all that we don’t deserve her. She sarcastically thanked all the women that she’s beaten over the last 974 days, including the “foreigners” who came from Raw and Smackdown like Bayley and Natalya.
Flammer declared herself the best in all of lucha libre since there is no one left she hasn’t beaten. She said her coronation will never end and then the lights went out and a video began playing of someone with bright red hair driving a pink lowrider.
The camera zoomed in and revealed a license plate that said “La Catalina” and who should show up? La Catalina herself! Catalina had a brief run in NXT before heading to CMLL. She was with AEW for a minute, but wasn’t happy with her position in the company, so now she’s in AAA.
Catalina congratulated Flammer and went to leave, but then had just one more thing to say. She mentioned that Flammer has never defeated La Catalina! From there a brawl broke out. Catalina dispatched Las Toxicas then drove Flammer’s face into her celebratory cake, fulfilling the wrestling rule that if there is cake, someone’s face must go into it.
Catalina then picked up the belt and held it high as Las Toxicas helped Flammer up the entrance ramp.
“OG” El Grande Americano vs. Octagon Jr.
The crowd gave Americano a healthy amount of booing as he made his entrance, swatting at fan signs and the like. There was a bit of a battle of crowd work until the bell rang and they were off.
They ran through a set of moves and pin attempts, but neither could get the other on the mat. Americano exited the ring ro reset and then came back charging, kicking Octagon into the corner. Octagon exploded out of it though and walked the ropes into a missile dropkick.
Americano bailed from the ring and Octagon followed with a suicide dive. Octagon went for a moonsault off the apron, but Americano moved and they fought up and down the ramp. Americano backdropped Octagon on the apron (the lucha-est part of the ring!) and then threw him back in for a series of whips and shoulder tackles.
Americano started messing with Octagon’s mask, but couldn’t get it off. Octagon fired up with some heel kicks and then a high knee in the corner. He went for a cover but Americano kicked out at two.
Octagon went for a crossbody, but Americano got his legs up and hit him with an exploder suplex into the corner. Americano went for a moonsault, but Octagon got his legs up. Americano countered that into an ankle lock and ripped Octagon’s mask off. Octagon was forced to tap out while the victorious Americano paraded around the ring with his mask.
Match Result: “OG” El Grande Americano defeated Octagon Jr.
After the match, a few Mexican celebrites at ringside were introduced including comedian Ojitos de Huevo. Americano came over and started messing with him which brought out El Verde Americano!
They two Americanos battled at ringside with OG dropping Verde into the announce table. Security eventually intervened, but couldn’t stop the Americanos from throwing hands. Verde sent OG sprawling up the ramp as the battled into the back.
WWE Intercontinental Title Match: Penta (c) vs El Hijo del Vikingo
Vikingo entered with Dorian Roldan and a couple of axes. I’ll just go out on a limb and predict that if he uses those axes, he might just win the match. I’d take a pin if parts of my body were going to be chopped off. Just saying.
Penta arrived to a massive ovation and is clearly one of the biggest stars in AAA as well as WWE and frankly, my heart.
The bell rang and they circled each other, working the crowd a bit until locking up and trading waistlocks. Vikingo transitioned into a head lock, but Penta broke it easily and put on one of his own. Vikingo stomped Penta’s feet and he shot him off the ropes for a brutal kick.
Vikingo tried to steal one with a rollup, but Penta kicked out. Vikingo went for a headscissor and Penta bailed from the ring to reset. Vikingo dove after him, but Penta grabbed him in midair and slammed him on the announce table!
Vikingo came back though, targeting the knee of Penta, sending him into the barricade. They got back into the ring and Vikingo tied the mask of Penta to the bottom rope. He then did pushups while Penta clutched his knee and tried to figure out what to do next.
Vikingo took his time with some chokes and then untied Penta’s mask so he could give him a superkick. Vikingo went back to working the knee of Penta, twisting and wrenching it. He put Penta in a fish hook camel clutch, but the Ref broke it up.
Vikingo went for a back body drop, but Penta countered with a spiked bulldog. He sent Vikingo into the corner for a dropkick and cover, but Vikingo kicked out. Penta went for a Penta driver, but Vikingo countered it and hung him up in ropes for a double stomp.
They started throwing hands in the middle of the ring, until Penta swept the leg and got Vikingo off his feet. Vikingo went off the ropes right into a dropkick from Penta for a two count. Vikingo crawled to the corner and dodged Penta’s charge. He hit a meteora in the corner and then went for a 450 off the top rope, but Penta caught him and countered it into a powerbomb for another two count.
Penta limped to the corner and charged Vikingo who caught him in a standing Spanish Fly. He hit a double stomp from the top rope and then went for a cover, but Penta kicked out at 2.5.
They moved to the ring apron and traded chops. Vikingo tried going up top, but Penta caught him on his shoulders. Vikingo countered it into a poisonrana on the ring apron (the most poisonous part of the ring!) and then hit a running shooting star press on Penta on the outside.
Vikingo threw Penta back into the ring and then suddenly, the Americanos, still fighting spilled out onto the entrance ramp. That distraction allowed Penta to hit Vikingo with a suicide dive and then a Penta driver back in the ring. He made the cover, btu Vikingo kicked out at two somehow.
Dorian jumped up on the mat after grabbing Penta’s ankle and the ref ejected him. That gave Vikingo a chance to grab the belt, but before he could do anything with it, Mini Vikingo arrived to grab it away from him. Mini clocked Vikingo with the belt and Penta used that distraction to nail Vikingo with a Mexican Destroyer and get the win to retain the Intercontinental title.
Match Result: Penta defeated El Hijo del Vikingo
