World Heavyweight title tournament to begin on WWE Raw

WWE has revealed some more information on how its new World Heavyweight Champion will be decided.

At WWE’s pre-Backlash press conference, Paul “Triple H” Levesque announced that the World Heavyweight Championship tournament will begin on Raw this coming Monday (May 8). There will be two triple threat matches on the episode. The winners will then face off against each other later that night to decide who will advance to Night of Champions.

Two triple threat matches will also take place on SmackDown next Friday (May 12), with those winners then facing each other in the main event of the episode. The winner from SmackDown will face the winner from Raw at Night of Champions to determine the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion.

WWE hasn’t revealed the participants for the tournament yet.

The newly created World Heavyweight title belt was unveiled by Levesque on Raw last week. With Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns being drafted by SmackDown, the World Heavyweight Championship will be the top men’s title for Raw.

If a SmackDown wrestler wins the World Heavyweight Championship tournament, they’ll presumably be moved to the Raw roster.

Night of Champions is being held in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, May 27.
