WWE legend appears in crowd during SummerSlam match

Nick Aldis says Bret Hart was first to text him after WWE SummerSlam match announcement

A WWE legend was in attendance at SummerSlam.

During the Nick Aldis/Gunther match on Saturday’s show in Minneapolis, Mickie James appeared in the crowd as Gunther was getting the upper hand over Aldis. At one point, she and Gunther argued at ringside.

Although Aldis put on a fight and battled out of one rear naked choke, he eventually submitted after Gunther reapplied the hold. After the match, James and their son Donovan entered the ring as the crowd applauded the SmackDown’s General Manager effort in the match.

A confrontation leads to a match

Aldis was initially suspended in storyline after an altercation with Gunther following Night of Champions. He eventually returned, but was taken out by Gunther immediately after, who was upset about not being part of the WWE title match for SummerSlam. Gunther and former champion Sami Zayn were then put in a tag match against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event last month where if he won, they would be put in the WWE title match as part of a fatal four-way. Punk & Rhodes won thanks to Aldis’ interference, setting up the SummerSlam match.
