WWE headquarters flag incident caused thousands of power outages

The incident where a giant American flag flew off WWE headquarters and caught fire ended up causing some significant power outages over the weekend.

Amid severe thunderstorm warnings, the flag flew into an electrical transmission tower in Stamford, Connecticut on Saturday night. Power company Eversource says approximately 5,000 of their customers in Stamford/Greenwich were immediately impacted, with power being restored to 3,000 of those within the first 20 minutes and the rest getting power back through the night. However, a bigger headache came the next day while trying to remove the flag.

The wind shifted during the flag removal and caused a power failure that affected 40,000 Eversource customers, the power company told the New York Times. The flag was removed by late Sunday afternoon and most power issues in the area look to have been resolved.

Touted as “one of the largest American flags in the country,” WWE raised the flag atop its corporate headquarters to recognize Veterans Day in November 2023. It was dedicated to all veterans and especially those who died during combat.

“The flag, which measures a massive 3,040 square feet at 76 feet wide and 40 feet tall, will fly as a beacon of patriotism – inspired by and in honor of all of our veterans, especially those troops killed in action,” the company wrote.
