WWE referee Charles Robinson details getting bit by bat

While being interviewed on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, WWE referee Charles Robinson detailed the bizarre situation where he recently suffered a bat bite.
The 61-year-old Robinson had to spend a night in the emergency room last month after he was bitten by a bat at his home. Robinson told Van Vliet that he was awoken by his two cats making noise in the middle of the night. He initially thought the bat was one of his referee gloves. When he tried to pick it up, it became clear that was not the case.
“Sleeping [at] 2 a.m. in the morning. Hear a noise in the bedroom — cats. We have two cats. One’s named George. The other is Michael: George Michael,” Robinson said. “And so I got up, used my flashlight, saw the two cats sitting there with their toys. I said, ‘Oh, cats. They’re just playing, having a good time.’
“Well, there was a big black blob right in the middle of the room. And we carry black latex gloves as a referee. So I said, ‘Hey, they got my glove. Let me pick it up so they don’t choke on it.’ Being the good cat dad that I am, bent down, pick it up — and that sucker bit me.”
Robinson said the bat got into his house by coming down his chimney. Due to the bite, he was in the hospital for five hours and received seven shots.
The bite happened while Robinson — a referee on the SmackDown roster — was already dealing with a broken foot that he suffered while setting up the ring at a WWE show. In addition to his referee duties, Robinson is part of the WWE production crew that sets up the ring and tears it down.
Robinson has now been with WWE for nearly 25 years, joining the company in 2001 after WCW closed its doors. He became a fan of the industry when he was around 10 years old going to see Ric Flair at shows.
On the subject of his future, Robinson told Van Vliet that he would love to continue refereeing for another 10 years.
“I need at least — what, five, six more years, at least, in the ring,” Robinson said. “I would love 10.”
