WWE says Asuka’s future is ‘up in the air’

Asuka WWE Backlash 2026

No one seems to know what Asuka’s future is with WWE.

During Raw on Monday, Michael Cole said Asuka’s future was “up in the air” following her loss to IYO SKY at Backlash. This comes as reports indicate that Asuka may be taking time away from WWE, and a segment earlier in the show seemed to hint at that.

The segment showed Asuka approaching SKY and hugging her. Asuka said that she had been looking for someone to take her position, and SKY was that person, telling her former pupil that she was proud of her. SKY said that they would always be family, even if they fought.

“Goodbye, Asuka-san,” SKY said as they hugged again. Asuka kissed SKY on the forehead and shared some words in Japanese before leaving with her luggage.

Asuka entering semi-retirement?

Following Asuka’s loss to SKY at Backlash, Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio that the former Women’s Champion was “semi-retired.”

“So, the story I heard is that she is semi-retired. I haven’t really gotten an exact meaning of what semi-retired means, but I guess people were wishing her goodbye and things like that backstage. So I don’t know if that means she’s going to Japan and still wrestle. I don’t know if that means she’s going to still do stuff here and there, but I was told semi-retired,” he said.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider on Monday reported that Asuka is “believed to remain aligned with the company.”
