WWE star AJ Lee reveals new film project

WWE star AJ Lee is collaborating with a legendary animation company on a new film project.

On Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” podcast, Lee opened up about running Scrappy Heart Productions with actress Aimee Garcia. Lee revealed that they are currently in the process of writing a movie for Toei — the iconic Japanese animation company that has created series like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Digimon.

“We just wrote our second feature. I think I have permission to say it,” Lee said. “I think this is the first time anyone’s hearing this. So we’re breaking news.

“Another example of manifestation. One of my favorite — I love anime so much. And so one of my favorite companies growing up was Toei. They did Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z. And like these things that raised me. And so we are writing a movie for Toei Animation. I think that’s all I can say. But just such a dream come true to be in their office and see like all Dragon Ball Z figures everywhere.”

Lee and Garcia were also co-writers of the Netflix original movie “Blade of the 47 Ronin.” Lee said, as Latina women, they started their production company with the goal of providing better representation for the next generation. In terms of other projects, they are developing a TV show and just produced their first short film. Lee also has written a feature that she is considering turning into a comic book first.

“I just wrote my first original feature by myself. I’m so excited,” Lee said. “I might make it a comic book first, but it’s a horror movie. And it’s like this mental health horror story. It is my child. So hopefully I can throw that out into the world soon.”

Breaking into Hollywood is something that Lee (AJ Mendez) focused on during the decade she was retired from WWE. She returned this September and is now back wrestling in addition to her other entertainment work.
