WWE title match for SummerSlam made official during Saturday Night’s Main Event
It’s a singles match in Minneapolis.
CM Punk and Cody Rhodes defeated Gunther and Sami Zayn on Saturday, confirming that the match at SummerSlam will remain a singles match between champion Punk and Rhodes.
The finish had Gunther strike Rhodes with the WWE title belt and powerbombed him. A referee ran to the ring to make the count, but suddenly Nick Aldis arrived and pulled the ref out. Aldis then struck Gunther with the WWE title, allowing Punk to drill Gunther with the GTS. He pulled tag team partner Rhodes on top of Gunther, giving his team the win.
After the match, Rhodes handed Punk the belt as the two celebrated.
A huge change in the WWE title scene
After taking time off following WrestleMania 42, Punk returned on last week’s Raw as a surprise replacement for Rhodes, who was injured earlier in the night against Gunther. Punk went on to defeat Zayn for the title in his hometown of Chicago, cementing himself as champion once again.
The following Friday, Rhodes met with Punk and the two ended up agreeing to a match at SummerSlam. Gunther, unhappy about the situation, complained to Nick Aldis. Later in the show, Aldis announced the tag match for SNME. Gunther responded by choking out Aldis, enraged he wasn’t getting a title match.
