Gagne was a contemporary of Lou Thesz and a major rival. He was one of the biggest stars on television during TV’s earliest days. However, his reluctance to change with the times resulted in the catastrophic downfall of one of the three largest pro wrestling companies of the era.

Karl Stern is a pro wrestling historian specializing in the 1980s and pioneer era (pre-1900) of pro wrestling. He is an author who has written several books on wrestling and independently runs the When It Was Cool retro pop culture website.
