Matt Hardy makes surprise return on WWE SmackDown

Matt Hardy made a surprise return to WWE television on tonight’s episode of SmackDown in his home state of North Carolina.

As Cesaro & Sheamus were in the ring, The Hardy Boyz’s music hit and Matt & Jeff Hardy came out to face them. The finish of the match was Matt hitting the Twist of Fate on Sheamus, tagging Jeff in, and Jeff hitting the Swanton Bomb to get the win.

Cesaro vs. Johnny Gargano (with Sheamus in Cesaro’s corner and Tommaso Ciampa in Gargano’s corner) was originally advertised for this week’s SmackDown.

This was the first time Matt has wrestled since saying it was “time for [him] to go home” this past September. Matt had been a member of the Raw roster before returning tonight. When he was last on TV, he was playing his “Woken” character and teaming with Bray Wyatt.

Matt tweeted last August that his lower back and pelvis had started to fuse together. It was noted on commentary during SmackDown that Matt had been out of action due to injury.
