AEW wrestler wins championship in CMLL
Thunder Rosa is the new Mexican National Women’s Champion.
Rosa defeated India Sioux at Arena Mexico on Friday, ending Sioux’s 511-day reign with the belt.
The finish of the match saw Rosa hit a double foot stomp before following it up with a Fire Thunder Driver for the win.
LuchaBlog posted the following about the match, “Thunder Rosa defeats India Sioux [11:20] Rosa is the 26th modern champion. Not good at all and everyone knew it. Rosa didn’t have a great night but Sioux was working at 1/3 effort & 1/3 speed, seemingly unhappy about losing the title. Crowd didn’t care mucha bout it anyway.”
Rosa earned the title shot by winning an eight-way elimination number one contender’s match on July 19.
Elsewhere on the card, Persephone retained the CMLL World Women’s Championship by defeating Tessa Blanchard. Hechicero successfully defended the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship against Roderick Strong. And Mascara Dorada defeated Komander in the finals of Torneo La Leyenda de Plata.
Rosa’s last appearance for AEW came in the Casino Gauntlet match at AEW Beach Break. She also teamed with Olympia in an unsuccessful challenge for the AEW Women’s World Tag Team titles against Divine Dominion on the Forbidden Door Buy-In pre-show on June 28.
