Update on AEW’s decision to move Kenny Omega vs. MJF to Beach Break
An update is available regarding why AEW moved a planned pay-per-view match between Kenny Omega and MJF to Wednesday’s Beach Break episode of Dynamite.
Omega defeated MJF for the AEW World Championship in a match carrying the stipulation that if he lost, he would never be able to challenge for the title again.
On the post-Dynamite edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, it was noted that the match had originally been planned for AEW Redemption.
Meltzer addressed the latest on the situation in the July 13, 2026 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, writing that MJF is believed to have pushed for the match to be moved to Beach Break.
Meltzer wrote:
“This match, and stipulation, where if Omega lost he could never challenge for the AEW title again for the rest of his career, was the plan for the 7/26 Redemption show in Montreal. The idea was Canada and the name of the show was Omega getting his last shot after two high-profile losses.
It was pushed, believed to be by MJF, to get it moved to television. I was not given a reason why, but it doesn’t matter where the suggestion came from, that’s a major change and Tony Khan approved of it. So he must feel he’s got something PPV worthy for Montreal on 7/26.”
AEW Redemption is scheduled for July 26 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. Only one match is officially confirmed for the show, with AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla defending her title against Willow Nightingale.
