Former WWE star reveals Vince McMahon’s vision for him as producer but he wanted to wrestle more
Matt Hardy recalled Vince McMahon leaning towards him becoming a WWE producer and coach towards the end of his contract in 2020. Hardy expressed disinterest in the idea and was not keen due to his intent to wrestle for as long as he can.
On The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy Podcast, Hardy discussed McMahon’s perspective on him potentially transitioning into a producer or coaching role in WWE. He explained that McMahon ‘saw the bigger money’ in keeping The Hardy Boyz, Christian, and Edge (Adam Copeland). Matt admits his focus was on continuing his in-ring career for as long as possible, and wanted to avoid taking on a backstage role that could pull him away from wrestling.
“I think both myself and Christian had that, just because we knew Vince saw the bigger money in both Adam (Copeland) and Jeff (Hardy). He liked both of us, too, don’t get me wrong. And he still took great care of us. But at the end of the day, when we worked for Vince and he saw something a certain way, I knew that was going to happen,” said Hardy. “Much like at the very end before I left WWE, at my contract, they were trying to get me to re-sign. But Vince was really trying to get me just to be a full-time producer or coach or whatever, agent. And I said, ‘Dude, I want to wrestle while I can. Like, if I can still wrestle, that’s what I would like to do.’ And I could just see how he saw me in that role.”
“And I know if I re-signed there, I might for a couple months do this cool angle with me and Windham as The Fiend and Jeff as Willow, but then he is going to put me back into that role because that is how he sees me and that is what he wants, and Vince always got what he wants.”
Matt’s final WWE appearance was in 2020. This concluded his second run with the company, which began as a surprise return at WrestleMania 33 with Jeff.
