Matt Hardy addresses confusing advertising of Jeff Hardy vs. Nic Nemeth TNA World title match
Matt Hardy has addressed what many have called confusing advertising regarding the Jeff Hardy vs. Nic Nemeth TNA World Championship match.
Jeff Hardy challenging Nemeth for the title was taped on Thursday, July 30 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. However, it did not air on the live episode of Impact, which was broadcast from the venue that night.
TNA officially announced the match on July 8. A TNA press release for the match read:
“The stage is set for one of the biggest TNA World Championship Matches in company history: reigning TNA World Champion Nic Nemeth battles Jeff Hardy on Thursday, July 30, live on Thursday Night iMPACT!, airing on AMC in the United States.”
Matt Hardy discussed the advertising of the match during the most recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, saying that TNA felt it needed to advertise some big matches ahead of time for its upcoming television tapings.
Matt Hardy said:
“People were saying, like, you need to advertise matches for these tapings. We did a couple tapings where they didn’t really advertise a lot because they didn’t want to spoil things, and they said, ‘You need to advertise matches for the tapings. What is going to be taking place there that night so we can buy tickets. We can sell tickets.’ And even before the Nic Nemeth, KC Navarro match happened, like two weeks before, they advertised, ‘Huge world title match in Philadelphia. It’s going to be Nic Nemeth versus Jeff Hardy.’ And that started selling tickets, and that’s what they need to do. And I agree with that.”
He noted that the graphic for the match did not state that it would take place on the live Impact show.
“They went specifically out of their way to put ‘live’ if it was going to be on the live show. And they even put together packages of all the matches that were going to be on the live show.”
Matt Hardy later continued:
“Those ads were advertised for the people in the Philadelphia area. That’s who we’re selling tickets for. That match happened on that night as advertised. It was never said, there was never a time where they said it would be on the live broadcast. I mean, reading comprehension is important too.”
Asked if he felt it was a fair assessment that casual TNA fans did not know there would be both live Impact matches and matches taped for future broadcasts, Hardy responded:
“That is fair. That isn’t wrong. That is fair. But it’s just one of those things, like, several times over, on the website there was a video, on social media it was out there about what all was specifically going to be on the live broadcast. And I think people just saw that match and they’re like, ‘Oh my God, this is such a big match,’ and they just got so excited like, ‘Oh my God, it must be happening.’ But they did not falsely advertise it for the live show ever.”
Nemeth also addressed the advertising for the match recently, stating that the wording was “confusing” on the ad for a segment of the audience. TNA also publicly invited LeBron James to be the title holder for the match. James never publicly responded to the invitation and was not at the show.
