WWE veteran explains major problem with Gunther’s current booking
AJ Styles talked about the restraints in Gunther’s career killer persona after retiring three WWE legends in the past year.
Styles talked about Gunther’s booking post their match at the Royal Rumble on The Phenomenally Retro Podcast. Given how he was being built with the career killer persona, Styles felt it was limiting.
“I can see where you’re coming from, I do, but what do we do? We can’t just have him retiring people, that’s not going to work, but there’s always the chance that he could. I get it. I don’t know. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I just don’t know what we’re trying to do, like he can’t retire everybody he wrestles.”
Styles expressed how Gunther would be the ideal candidate to be a heel World Champion in WWE in the current landscape.
“Is that the one thing we don’t have right now, a heel champion? In the matches that we have, we’ve still not got a clear heel.”
“With Seth (Rollins) and Roman (Reigns), there’s no clear heel there. With (CM) Punk and Cody (Rhodes), no real heel there. These guys are huge stars, but I wouldn’t say they’re hated heels. Gunther is a hated heel.”
Gunther was in the running for the Undisputed WWE Championship over the past couple of months on SmackDown. At SNME, Nick Aldis’ interference costing him and Sami Zayn the tag team match led to a further escalation of their rivalry.
At Fanatics Fest, Triple H announced a match between Aldis and Gunther for SummerSlam. This would mark the SmackDown General Manager’s first match since joining WWE in 2023.
