WWE Royal Rumble returning to San Antonio’s Alamodome

For the fourth time, the WWE Royal Rumble will take place in San Antonio, Texas.

The company announced Wednesday that the kickoff on their road to WrestleMania will take place at the Alamodome on Saturday, January 28th, with an on-sale date on Friday, September 30th.

It continues a run of stadium shows for some of WWE’s biggest premium live events of the year which includes WrestleMania, SummerSlam and this past weekend’s Clash at the Castle.

While it’s the event’s fourth time in the city, it’s the third time it will be held in the Alamodome which is celebrating its’ 30th anniversary next year.

Per usual, the event will feature both men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches with the winners earning a future title match opportunity at WrestleMania in Los Angeles.

The event first debuted in the city and the Alamodome in January 1997 which saw Steve Austin win the Rumble match on a show that also featured then-WWE Champion Sycho Sid defend against Shawn Michaels.

Ten years later in 2007, the Rumble took place at the AT&T Center with The Undertaker winning the 30-man Rumble match.

Another ten years later in 2017, the Rumble returned to the Alamodome with Randy Orton picking up the Rumble win.
