Callum Newman injury update | Exclusive
Callum Newman was close to not being cleared in time for the start of the G1 Climax 36.
Newman injured his shoulder during his match against Yota Tsuji at NJPW Dominion last month in Osaka after taking a belly-to-belly suplex into the corner.
Newman confirmed the injury in a social media post on July 2, but implied that he was “still gonna win the G1.”
On Saturday evening’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that Newman had only been cleared to return on Monday.
Meltzer said:
“I didn’t sense that Newman is necessarily 100 percent. He actually just got cleared on Monday. There was a chance that, even though he was adamant that he was going to wrestle, there actually was a good chance he might not have made the first week. They could have just delayed it a week if worst came to worst.”

Newman defeated Yuya Uemura in a match that went 15 minutes and 42 seconds on the opening night of the G1 at the NOW Arena on Saturday.
The G1 continues on July 18 with a show in Sapporo. Newman is scheduled to team with Zane Jay against Dick Togo and Ren Narita. His next tournament match will take place on July 19 against Narita.
